Forums Other Destination advice Christmas / New Year break ideas

  • 17 posts

    Hi guys

    After some advice.

Looking to go away for some winter sun between xmas and new year for approximately 5-10 days. Would prefer not to visit the middle east as i have already been there enough times.

Wonder if anyone has suggestions on destinations/resorts that don’t break the bank (appreciate it is an expensive time to go away). Any thoughts very welcome.

    Thanks

Miami/Florida Keys/Gulf Coast side, e.g. Venice – warm enough to sit on the beach in winter, but may be too long a flight for just five days. Also, US not cheap at the moment (but where is?)

Las Canarias – warm all year round, won’t break the bank, popular with Brits(!), but if you stay away from the main ‘resort’ towns there are plenty of nice bits.

Echo that all that @Scott has said 🙂

I would also echo the above with one caveat, the Florida prices this year into next are ferocious. Probably due to pent up domestic demand/snow birds/FX but our usual places and Airbnb have at least doubled in price.

    Maybe grab a cruise?

I managed to book 3 weeks mostly in the Florida Keys over Xmas and New Year, the vast majority of which has been paid for with avios and points. There are still award seats and points nights to be had if you have stashes of these and can be a bit creative/flexible.
Itinerary for 3 of us (so 2 rooms) is UK to DC in F using a 241. 4 nights in DC for cash. DC to Key West with avios on AA. 15 nights in Key West, Marathon and Key Largo on Bonvoy and HH points. 2 nights at IC Doral for cash. Avios flights home from MIA in Y but with extra leg room seats for cash.
The main outlay has been the hire car (which was £1200 for 18 days but even that feels reasonable compared to some rates I’ve seen), and the surcharges on the avios booking!

*In fact with the cheapest hotel rooms hovering around $500 pn, this could be one of the rare times that it’s worth buying points if another bonus offer crops up. The exception to this is IHG who are currently charging around 100k pn for Holiday Inns!!

Inflation, currency movements and supply/demand mean that much of the USA is outrageously expensivel. It’s also a long way for 5 days.

Go the the Canaries. If you choose well, the food will be splendid, the locals welcoming, the climate perfect, the landscapes picture-perfect, and the flights short. Just stay away from the big resorts and destination hotels and look for a locally managed boutique hotel in a traditional town. And brace yourself for a lounge and cabin full of squawking babies and faffing parents if you fly in Club.

O/P has 5 – 10 days. If 5 days definitely stick with short haul, and totally agree re Canaries. Maybe not Lanzarote/Fuerteventura as these can get chilly in December and January if you’re unlucky. Tenerife/Gran Canaria more reliable.

Antalya Province in Turkey. It may not be tropical but the December or January sunshine is perfect sunbathing weather. However, the real bargain is the price of top 5-star all-inclusive hotels in the winter season. New Year is expensive because of demand from the rich of Istanbul and Ankara but for most of the winter season November-April, you can stay in an excellent hotel on the beach, with oodles of restaurants, bars and entertainment, for under £50pppn, all-in. The flights to Antalya are reasonable too.
