Just back from 5 nights in the Willard in Washington DC booked last year when there was a crazy points sale.
Amazing hotel with room upgrade, complimentry drink and a credit of 41US$ PPN towards breakfast so the breakfast credits while slow in the UK are sure working over there which saved us a fortune!
Also great to watch the politicians wheeling and dealing in the Round Bar although the cowboy hat looked a little out of place!
Go there if you can and OH already looking for next cheeky IHG stay
What was the upgrade; one category or better?
We were there for 3 nights just before Xmas, it was gorgeous. We paid for one night in a suite with the Ambassador voucher and they upgraded it to the next cat and let us have it for the 3rd night instead of the standard room we’d booked, probably in the same points sale! Got a very nice bottle of wine, macaroons and a white chocolate model of the Washington monument, lol.
I haven’t had any issues getting the Diamond breakfast in the UK though, with several stays in England and Scotland since it was introduced as a welcome amenity.
For us, the credit covered a (huge portion) hot item each, plus a (also huge) fruit plate to share, plus coffee. It was great value.
The menus are all on the Willard website with prices.

Went from a 1 Queen Classic to a 1 King Junior Suite!
How much was the breakfast?
It depends what you order but Coffee OJ and a three egg omelettw plus the 20% tip still came in below the 82$ credit

OH just loved the upgrade 🙂 3 times at check in she heard “as a diamond member” ans the free GNT at $16.50 was very tasty. That said we felt duty bound to visit the bar and pay as it was such a fab hotel with great staff an didn;t want to take a lend! The bed time story cards were a nice touch as well
Found my receipt from April 2022. I paid $49.50 before tip for porridge, scrambled eggs and bacon, a juice (not refilled) and a tea (served in large cappucino mug, not refilled, stone cold by the time hot food arrived so new cup insisted upon). I don’t really consider this to be in the spirit of the free breakfast benefit as $41pp does curtail your choices and leaves you on the hook for the tip. The Willard has no buffet so the technicality in the smallprint that free breakfast = free run at the buffet doesn’t apply here.

Their all American gives you OJ,coffee, full breakfast, fruit and toast for $41 which IMHO is as good as a free run at the buffet unless you use the free run as an excuse to make a picnic. Like I said we ate well every morning within the $41 including tip.
There was a conference of African leaders on when we were there so we had to pass security every time we went back in. Got quite chatty with the Secret Service guys and gave them Cadbury’s Roses and Quality Street we’d brought with us!
One benefit of the credit was that they let us spend it on room service on our last night as we were leaving early for a flight the next morning.
We were in the 1 bedroom corner suite with a view, which had a huge living room with a sofa bed so our teenager could have his own space and bathroom. You could see the Washington monument on one side and (just) the White House on the other. We saw POTUS leaving in a huge convoy one morning.
I’d love to go there every Christmas!
