I don’t know if they still do it (or are when owned by Tesco still), but Tesco Bank did.

Interesting re Aviva as I used Amex for home insurance with them on 1 April.
Privilege (part of UK Insurance, who also own Direct Line and Churchill) do take Amex for home and car insurance ( purchased both in past fortnight)

We use Direct Line for landlords insurance and Amex also accepted for that.

Hi all. Bumping this thread up as it’s car insurance time and I’ve just spent a thrilling 2 hours trying to find ANY car insurer who’ll accept AMEX. Not one offering a competitive price- any company at all!

To update the above, these companies no longer take Amex:
    Aviva
    Autonet
    Carole Nash
    Dial Direct
    Post Office
    Esure
    Direct Line
    M&S
    John Lewis
    LV
    Geoffrey
    Budget

    Phew!

Hopefully that will save someone a bit of time…..
And if anyone has any tips for companies that do still take it, please update us here!

    Thanks

The earlier post saying Aviva didn’t accept Amex is dated 14th April 2024, but I used Amex to pay Aviva on 6th June 2024.

We always pay by Amex each April, I think we’re with LV atm. I’ll be annoyed if this has changed, although I think we’ll trigger the 241 without it this year due to other expenses we’ve had!

I paid LV car insurance last year and Directline insurance for landlords (December last year) using my Amex card. Were you using a personal card? If so, they seem to have changed fairly recently.

Some insurance companies bought others and it may depend on the original acquired company whether Amex is still accepted.

I just looked at my Aviva car insurance renewal quote due in March.
If i buy it today the payment page shows the Amex logo

    Some further answers….

Looks like it can depend on how/where you buy cover. Aviva, directly on. Their own website, offers Amex.
However, if you go via any of the comparison sites there’s no Amex option. May also apply with Direct Line.

Problem solved? No… The Aviva price directly with them is £350 MORE than through the aggregators.
Not sure I want my Platinum SUB enough to pay an extra £300 for exactly the same cover…

Ps LV definitely don’t take amex… I worked for them until recently

Admiral still does (as of 27/01/24)

£350 more?? My entire car insurance was £350… (71 plate small SUV, not an old banger)

I suppose it doesn’t matter if you only get it to comply with the law and never crash, but when I’ve gone through a comparison site in the past it always ended up asking the wrong questions and sending incorrect data to the insurer

I use comparison sites to see which ones might be cheapest and then do a handful individual quotes directly (via cashback sites).

@Paulm555 – well I’m not sure how long you worked at LV and I’m not disputing what you say, but I paid LV by Amex. Possibly a very recent change? It was an online renewal as was Directline landlord insurance in December.

ok thanks. @john yes that’s right. Aviva through a comparison site = £369 (Amex not accepted). Aviva quote direct, via aviva.co.uk £718 (£349 more)- but does accept Amex. Exactly the same cover, btw- I work in insurance so I know the pitfalls of the comparison sites for people who don’t read the cover info.

@LD27- thanks. Weird as I spoke to an old colleague this afternoon, who confirmed they still don’t take it (but the transition to Allianz-ownership is underway behind the scenes, so perhaps some will as the transition takes place).

I can’t justify paying so much more just to acquire some Amex points so I’ll sacrifice them on this occasion. Good luck all!
