Good morning. I just wondered if anyone knew if you would be refunded the 3% foreign transaction fee with a refund on a hotel booking that was made in Euros? Or perhaps, if Amex also charge an FX fee on the refunded amount as well so it would be a double whammy? Thanks in advance.
Good question… I don’t know – however in last 18 months or so they few occasions I have had a refund the strengthening £ has meant I have gotten more back than originally paid so have not looked into it further.
I appreciate £ is still at stupidly low value.
A strengthening pound would mean that you get back less than you paid
In my experience, the FX fee refund won’t happen automatically. However, if you reach out to CC on chat, they usually do refund it.
The fee is automatically refunded within the refund transaction but you are subject to FX movements.
So if the pound weakens you’ll get more and if it strengthens you’ll get less.
Amex does automatically refund FX fees if the merchant links the refund to an original transaction. Sometimes a merchant will initiate a refund from a different system/merchant code or as a standalone transaction so Amex can’t match it so an FX fee may get charged on the refund but they will reverse it if you call/chat and identify the relevant transactions.
