Forums Payment cards American Express Welcome bonus: ordered Gold but Platinum looks better

  • 2 posts

I have never owned an amex before so a few days ago I ordered the Gold reward card because it is good value (welcome bonus, free the first year and deliveroo credit). Though now that I’ve looked at it closer, the Platinum card looks even better (575£ but 70K welcome bonus, 300£ dinner credit, airport+eurostar lounge, travel+car insurance…)
Now that I’ve ordered the gold (not activated yet though) is it too late to get the Platinium welcome bonus instead (I’m ok with cancelling the gold)?
    Thanks!

    Don’t cancel the gold!

The fact you have not activated it is irrelevant, you successfully applied so that’s a done deal.

I suggest you read this and decide your best strategy going forward:

You’re scuppered for the Platinum for another 2 years at least (unless you have an eligible partner), however excellent returns can be had from gold in the form of sign up bonus, 10k bonus at the end of the year for £15k spend, referrals and special offers. Also the lack of a fee for the first year. As above, don’t cancel it until you’ve thought it through.

Also if you have no other Amex you can also get the BAPP sign up, if you collect avios.

I’m unsure but could cancelling down within 14 days cooling off period help with this?

Then leave a month or so and apply for platinum?

The 14 days cooling off period won’t make a difference to the way the bonuses work, Amex will still see it that you have held the gold card within the past 2yrs.

Long term you’ll earn more MR points with Preferred Rewards Gold than you will with Platinum.

With the changes to Platinum announced today for new members being credit card rather than charge card customers, there’s likely to be an upgrade offer to existing credit card customers coming. So hold onto gold for now and wait a few hours/days.

In the past there have been numerous reports of people upgrading almost immediately after getting the Gold Card (or achieving the gold SUB and then upgrading) and still receiving the Platinum SUB (or additional difference) once hitting the spend target. Worth calling Amex CS.

This could al have been amended with the also recent reports of bonus not posting etc

OP: in your calculation you have omitted the £100 Harvey Nichols credit, which together with the dining credits, makes it £400 back.

It is true that Rewards Gold may earn more points over time, but if you can still have a steady stream of Amex referrals (referrals can apply with any free cards), because of the higher referral bonus you may still earn more MR with the platinum (have made 155,000 bonus MR just in the first 6 months of having the card and aiming for at least 90,000 pa in the following years
