    So, checked in the app and it showed my Avios 2-4-1 in First outbound on the 5th Oct (this thurday) LHR to IAD (1725-arrive 2025) was cancelled (was fine a couple of days ago in the app) with the inbound from IAH intact. Still on sale. No emails received about the cancellation.

    Called You First..hopeless and will call me back tomorrow!..so called the Silver line who checked and confirmed it is indeed cancelled.

    I’ve called and been re-routed same day via ORD in First with BA and then AA…getting in a lot later… (1535, landing in Washington 2322)

    In terms of compensation, assuming the airline is at fault, am I correct that this will be 600 Euros?

    If the doors open at Washington 3 minutes late at 2325..would further ‘delay compensation’ be due?

    Any advice would be welcome!

    The time that matters for the cancellation compensation is the scheduled arrival time. New UK261 rights attach to your rerouted itinerary, but that new trip would itself have to be delayed by more than three hours to trigger any delay compensation.

    For the original cancellation compensation, as your rerouted flight gets you into Washington less than three hours later than the original schedule, BA will say you aren’t entitled to compensation, even if they didn’t cite ‘extraordinary circumstances’. While Article 5.1(c)(iii) gives a -1/+2hr time window to trigger the compensation, it then refers you to Article 7.2(c).

    Ok…so the delay comp is fine…

    A last minute cancellation less than 14 days pre-departure, if BA is at fault, should mean a 600 Euro payent is due?

    That’s just as complicated! The CJEU says that a departure over one hour earlier than the originally scheduled flight entitles you to the full £520 compensation and that it cannot be reduced by half, but that is a post Brexit decision. BA’s position is to pay at 50% which is the one thing that cannot be correct as it’s either 0% or 100%. If you took the matter to MCOL you ought to win although there is a risk of BA claiming that your rerouting was agreed/voluntary.

    Did BA offer you a re-routing at all? If so, did it leave less than an hour early and get in less than 3 hours late? If they offered you a re-routing that would avoid compensation and you chose something else then they would be right to say no.

    Do you know why it has been cancelled? There’s a “cancellation reason” thread on the BA Flyertalk board which generally has the cause of cancellations, or someone can find them if you ask.

    If it’s not an extraordinary circumstance then you will be due compensation based on the scheduled departure time. As JDB says, BA would be likely to pay 50% when you claim, but I believe CEDR will tell them to pay the rest if necessary. MCOL would be an alternative, but CEDR is probably easier, albeit slower.

    If it is an extraordinary circumstance then no compensation. Your scheduled arrival time is within 3 hours, so no compensation based on that.

    Unbelievable.

    After maybe 45 mins arranging a re-route via ORD Tuesday eve, I learn that the BA293 this Thursday has been re-started as BA1293…same flight but an equipment change from an A380 to a 777.. so finally back on track but a poor experience and I suspect all this agro for a commercial decision by BA that I’m sure others will understand more than I.
