Forums Other Destination advice Washington DC recommendations

  • 42 posts

We are going to be Washington for four nights in June. We would appreciate any recommendations about hotels central to sightseeing area, tours, restaurants etc. We are both 70 so our nightlife is classical music and theatre. We will be travelling to and from Chicago so will probably use DCA. All advice gratefully received.

If you like museums you’ll be spoiled for choice. If you’re happy with lots of walking, it’s fun to wander around spotting the iconic sights like the Abraham Lincoln memorial, White House etc. Take plenty of water out with you, we were there one August and it was tropical!

Arlington Cemetery is also very interesting with JFK’s grave and the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

I don’t know if you’ve used DCA before but one thing we found out was that the hotel shuttles often don’t start running till 6 am, which is no use if you’ve got a very early flight. Fortunately we were staying at the HGI virtually across the road so a taxi was cheap and quick.

It’s a great city and we’re going back in December to see it at Xmas. Planning to visit Mount Vernon then as well; OH went a few years ago while on a work trip and brought me the most beautiful Christmas tree decoration from the gift shop (I collect them from each place we visit).

Love Washington DC. I’d recommend the Willard using the Ambassador Weekend Voucher.

Old Ebbitt Grill was nice. They did excellent seafood platters which were half price after 23.00!

DCA is the best way to arrive in DC.

Especially good if you are staying in the Crystal City area. Most of the hotels are technically walkable from the airport (through the multistorey and then the underpass onto the Mt Vernon trail).

The Marriott at Crystal City has (or at least had) direct lift access to the metro (and the underground maze of Crystal City shops).

Crystal City is very walkable along the Mt Vernon trail to central DC. Takes about 45 minutes.

We’re staying at the Venn in the embassy district, it’s a Marriott Tribute Portfolio property, I think. If you’re an RCI member (long shot, I realise!) it’s one that they do really good rates on from time to time.

Not sure what the current situation is re Covid and also post 6 Jan last year, but a guided tour of Capitol Hill was a real highlight and I can highly recommend.

In my opinion DC is the best city in the US. Super low rise, nice buildings, lovely walking city, green space and lots to do. If you are into politics you will really enjoy yourself.

Previously stayed at The Willard and Park Hyatt. Willard was in need of refurbishment, room felt rather old but got a great upgrade (was IC Ambassador at the time). Willard great for the Mall/White House/ Congress. Park Hyatt is lovely. One of my favorite city hotels and is basically in Georgetown.

You are bound to have a great time.
