Forums Frequent flyer programs Virgin Flying Club Wanting to fly UC with 2 kids using points

  • 1 post

New to the forum so apologies if this is easy to find somewhere. I’m looking to take my children aged 13 and 10 on their first UC flight with my points. With the recent changes is there anywhere people would recommend to take children this age for a reasonable amount of points? I have around 200,000 with 1 companion but could wait until I have a second…. Feel like I’ve searched everywhere but not having much luck. Will fly from any UK airport too. Thanks

Have a look at this article: https://www.headforpoints.com/2024/11/11/virgin-flying-club-dynamic-pricing-analysis/

Basically your only chance of a decently priced redemption is India or the US East Coast (mainly January for the latter!). The move to dynamic pricing has made it hugely difficult to get Upper Class seats on leisure routes at a sensible price.

JFK has some decent availability, although needing to travel in school holidays compounds the problems caused by dynamic pricing. A trip to NYC in UC would be very exciting for any young person.

You can search for points pricing month by month on the Virgin reward seat finder page. It doesn’t show the cash element though.

The Virgin reward finder is a simple tool. The devil is in the detail: eg, The VS departure that leaves Delhi at 11am is far more points than the 2am departure.
Similarly, A350s to LAX tend to cost far more points in Upper than non-A350 flights.
    Damned cunning, that dynamic pricing.

Indeed, the day time flight from JFK is also a lot more points than the red eyes!

Obviously you need to double check on the VS website or app because prices can change at any moment.

We lucked out twice – got saver seats of the coffin variety to MCO but had a last minute equipment change to the A330-900.

As mentioned, you can find availability to JFK in Upper Class, even in the school holidays. We snagged 3 seats in the October half term to JFK for 29k points each and there are still plenty of seats at this price point today (actually more than there were last week when we booked!)

Getting return flights is more tricky but if you have Avios as well then you can return on BA if you can’t find anything with VS.
