Am I going mental? I thought Virgin had increased taxes/charges by approximately £100 for a return trip? However, I just did a comparison between the same flights I took this year (booked in Aug 2021) and a flight to the same island in the Caribbean for March 2023.
March 22 taxes: £505.47
March 23: 777.06!Yup I think there was an article about the double increase in taxes for both VS and BA. £495 one way and £809 return (LHR-BGI). Yes cash prices are high and there is still ‘value’ to use points. But its a kick in the teeth for many who would not pay cash prices and are in the game for the aspirational gains. UK airlines are among the worst offenders with surcharges but its hard to vote with your feet if u want direct flights and a way of earning a reasonable amount of points via credit cards.
The £ – $ exchange rate is awful at the moment and since many airline costs (least of all foe fuel) are charged in $ it’s led to increased costs
I booked a hotel in the US last October. The rate at the times led to a cost of £1820. Stayed at the hotel end of May. The bill was £ 2020.
Airport fees have gone up. Proper Government taxes have gone up as well. It all mounts up.
Last October I booked a mid size car for a 4+ week one way US trip. Because BA cancelled the flight by 1 day this potentially screwed the car rental..got on to the third part US booking site…’Sorry, we can’t change anything…cancel and re-book’..Must be joking looking at current prices, so called Alamo direct…couldn’t have been more helpful, luckily,….booking moved by one day. Cost last October $1550…
