Forums Frequent flyer programs Virgin Flying Club Virgin Red to Gold

  • 12 posts

    Hello,

Have seen mixed feedback about new Virgin members needing 1000 tier points for Gold Flying Club in their first year, vs 1400 tier points. Hoping to hear any success from others on the 1000 tier points!

I was Virgin Red status at beginning of this year, then upgraded to Silver middle of the year. So I have until middle of next year to retain Silver/upgrade to Gold.

Ideally I would leverage my flights from first half of this year – the 400 tier points that earned Silver in first place – to unlock Gold status by end of this year. Basically to achieve Gold status sooner.

Is that possible? My emails from Virgin suggest 1000 tier points across 2023 wouldn’t mean I unlock Gold. I’d effectively need 1400 tier points over this 1.5 year period (H1 2023: 400 upgrade Silver, H2 2023/H1 2024: 400 retain Silver + 600 upgrade gold). The Virgin website isn’t clear on this point for “Red to Gold” either.

    Thanks in advance!

You need 400 Tier Points to get to Silver, and 1000 to Gold. This is calculated based on the upgrade and renewal cycle that they employ.

A Red member needs to accrue 400 Tier Points in the upgrade cycle, defined as the period of time between the current date of the month to the first date of the same month in the previous year. For example, you would see an upgrade to Silver if you tipped over to 400 Tier Points between 1st December 2022 and 11th December 2023 (using today as an example).

Once you are Silver, you move away from the upgrade cycle and toward fixed period logic. Fixed period is defined as the day after you gain your Silver or Gold status (or renew it) plus the remaining days to the end of that month, plus a further twelve months. For example, if you tipped over to 400 today, you would then have until December 31st 2024 to renew it. When you’re in a fixed cycle, the Flying Club website lists your renewal date below your Tier Point total at the top.

If you were able to fly to accrue 1000 TPs in one calendar year, then you should be VS Gold, per my understanding. You would move, as soon as you got to 400, to a fixed period, rather than retain the upgrade cycle, but the accrued TPs shouldn’t have been lost, which seems to be what you’re suggesting VS are saying in the latter paragraph.
