Let me just start this off by saying my use case here is very specific.
But looking at going to NYC for a few nights next November.I’ve found with Virgin points I can get a return for 31k points and £255 in fees, whereas the same flights with BA (Avios) are 100k avios and £200 in fees. This is for an economy flight, which I’m happy with. I don’t earn accrue huge numbers of points as I have no business travel, but we put through all our spending on credit cards so earn a decent amount for economy flights. I’ve obviously been well aware of the dynamic pricing issue with VA but was pleasantly surprised by this!
It seems Virgin points are still worth collecting for economy flights? Totally agree with upper class redemptions being few and far between. The changes are generally MUCH worse for the majority of people. But for economy flights they don’t seem horrendous
Numbers above are wrong!!
BA Avios are 50k avios and £100 in fees compared to Virgin 31k points and £255 in fees.
Not as much difference as I expected. What are the cash fares for NYC in November?
What are the cash fares for NYC in November?
£790 with virgin atlantic (advantage is its from MAN- my local airport)
or £558 with BA from LHRCash seems king for BA with this one, whereas virgin points would be useful
I’m not sure if your dates in November are fixed but I would be aiming for premium economy!
E.g. 7-11 November
28,000 Virgin Points + £481.23

I agree with Froggee. Consider the value, rather than decide by “cost alone”.
Surprised to find out there are still saver tickets left during July peak summer holiday. Booked 3 upper class tickets yesterday for LAX-LHR that cost 140k + $700. Virgin points are still worth something
So families would do well to head to Disney California rather than Florida next summer?! Probably less humid as well.

That’s great. Per ticket?
I do think Virgin points still has some use. It’s just unfortunate that even the saver tickets pricing varies quite a bit. It does make it harder to ‘aim’ for a certain amount. It’s more a – I’ll see how many points I have and whether it’s enough to book at the time situation now

Agreed, but that lack of certainty will/has put off loads of current members . I’ve tended to use Virgin points for economy these past few years as the increase in fees in UC made it poor value for me) and I’ve been able to a get a saver redemption both ways for NYC in early summer. However, that has meant taking an outward flight much later in the day than preferred(whereas I was previously always able to get a morning flight when flying to JFK and booking this far out) and the amount of saver flights available across the dates I checked doesn’t fill me with confidence that I’ll definitely get a similar deal in the future, even off peak on their route with lots of options, especially as I don’t trust VA not to tinker with this further.
Flying another route or with less flexibility than I had this time would increase the risk of not being able to redeem for decent value so I feel I need to be much more circumspect about collecting Virgin points until the situation becomes clearer. Maybe VA will respond to the backlash they’ve had by releasing more saver seats, maybe they’ll tighten up even more.

This is the biggest negative with points collection. You save and save and push through spending through a certain card or app to get points and they just change the system. I don’t mind having to have more points needed due to inflation. Thats fine. But having some certainty is what’s needed. Robs right in the past about if they just had the guaranteed saver seats it would be fine.

That’s total for 3 of us and I used 1 companion voucher. The final price was 93k + £590 for one way ticket from LAX-LHR with new seat at end of July which I think it’s bargain.
