Hi – I am going to close my Virgin Atlantic card now I have a Barclaycard Avios Card. I don’t generate many virgin miles and it will take me the next 5-10 years to generate enough for a First flight. I have approximately 70000 miles and am looking to transfer to a hotel loyalty card scheme and use the points for hotel rooms for a USA trip in the Summer. Does anyone have any thoughts on the best scheme to convert to?
@Rob ran an article on this:

I recently transferred some Virgin points to IHG, 1:1. Had to call (with the accompanying over an hour wait time) and it took a week for the points to show up.
It worked, but pretty painful dealing with Virgin.
https://www.headforpoints.com/2020/12/06/book-hotels-with-virgin-points/ gives more advice about conversion options.
Hilton is slightly better than IHG, although still not great – it may depend which scheme you already have an existing balance with. Where are you going in the USA, though? You can still achieve decent “value” for a Virgin point here.
70k will get you 105k HH points
Which at the Conrad Midtown Manhattan will get you a suite for the night (with 10k HH left over too).
Which could cost you $800 cash.
So that’s still pretty close to 1p per Virgin point if you work the maths back. Not that I’d ever book somewhere on the basis of £/point ratios achievable – once you have the points, just book the hotels where you want to go.
