Suspect this is a bit of a niche topic, but I’m curious about the finer details of Virgin Atlantic / Vietnam Airlines’ partnership.
There is a page detailing tier points you can earn here.
Tier points promised (200?!?) under the headline ‘Tier Points earned for flights marketed by Virgin Atlantic and operated by Vietnam Airline’ is very appealing. However, that would suggest that you can book them through Virgin Atlantic? And only redemptions can be booked through Virgin Atlantic… and redemptions are ruled out of tier point collection on partner flights, aren’t they?
Looking at doing a Delhi to Hanoi flight end of the month, which would be over the 2000km required for 200 tier points, potentially. And is available in Upper Class at a very appealing rate (particularly taxes and fees).
It would seem that the ‘Tier Points earned for flights marketed and operated by Vietnam Airlines’ rates would put that as as 75 tier point earner if bought in cash from Vietnam Airlines direct, but why do they list the 200 tier point earn rate for ‘marketed by Virgin Atlantic and operated by Vietnam Airline’ if it’s not actually possible to buy them?
It’s a bog-standard codeshare arrangement.
The Virgin website can sell you London to Vietnam flights as a VS codeshare operated by Vietnam Airlines.
This is the ONLY route it can sell you. You can’t book any other Vietnam Airlines flights with a VS flight number unless they connect to a London service, and even then the eligible connections are restricted.
Redemptions are not part of this but of course you can book Vietnam Airlines redemptions in the usual way.
