Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points
Planning to take my 21 year old godson to Venice next year. What is the best time to visit and best area to stay?
Getting away from the crowds in Venice is maybe a fools errand, but I do like Cannareggio, particularly north and west of the old Jewish Ghetto, as somewhere it is still possible to find normal uncrowded streets as well as Osterias serving simple but very good food if you like that sort of thing. If you’re after Michelin stars and ultra-luxury it won’t be as good.
Do you have any hotel points in play to use, as the HfP team have reviewed several of the main hotels where points can be used in the area?
Venice is a zoo during the day which cannot be avoided. But once the day trippers leave, you are left with a very nice Italian city. You can avoid the hoards pretty easily during the day too, but it will mean you skip the “top sights”.
As for food: on the way back from the cemetery, we had a late lunch at Osteria alla Frasca and it was the best meal on out week in Italy (Venice and Rome reliving our honeymoon of 30 years ago). Osteria alle Testiere was very much worth the hype and whilst Bistrot de Venise is properly touristy, I had some stuffed pasta with saffron and sweet almonds that was supposedly a very old recipe, but it was the best thing I’ve eaten in a very long time.
