Forums Frequent flyer programs Virgin Flying Club VA Select Voucher + Reward Voucher

  • 6 posts

I have many years of experience with British Airways two for one vouchers, et cetera, but I’m now getting into Virgin Atlantic vouchers.

On a recent flight, my wife accepted the offer of a downgrade from upper class, with the promise of a free return ticket and the gate agent said there were no restrictions, which I was very sceptical about. I have just tried to use this voucher at supposedly the earliest possible time for flights to Barbados and no availability, which I guess was probably no surprise, but very disappointing.

I also have two vouchers obtained through my credit card and I doubt I’ll be able to upgrade from premium economy, because they’re probably won’t be any reasonably priced tickets available. I was quoted about 600,000 points per ticket, which is absolutely ridiculous.

I wonder if anyone has any reasonable success with this select voucher? Maybe the best chance is to try to use it on flights to either JFK or IDA, which may not be such a popular route?

    I’d welcome any advice.

Is it a voucher you can see in your Virgin account? If so, does it say what restrictions it carries (e.g. has to be award availability)?

Re your credit card vouchers, it has indeed become much more difficult to get value out of them, especially if you can’t be flexible on dates. There are some threads on here and other websites about ways to use them but one way would be to book a reasonably=priced award seat to (e.g.) ATL or JFK and connect to Barbados.

For this trip, we had already booked our cruise and so had very little flexibility. We have learnt that we need to book our flights first, so maybe having a selection of cruisers available, which is easier for us as we are retired.

The first voucher was obtained by my wife downgrading from upper class, an experience which she was disappointed with that as we read that the service was much better than it used to be in premium economy. The agent assured her that there were no restrictions on booking the free flight, which was far from the truth and I have complained to Virgin Atlantic. We had switched our preference from British Airways due to the difficulties in recent years, but we may think again if we are unsuccessful next time we attempt this transaction.

The other vouchers are indeed showing in my account, with their terms and conditions and I have no issue here, but it is unfortunate that we have to use so many top up miles due to our changing status from silver to red.

So what actually are the restrictions on the voucher your wife received? If she was misled about it initially, I would try pushing for points or voucher which could just be used for a cash equivalent.

I’m not sure that the gate agent at JFK understood the rules for using select vouchers. We were given a telephone number to ring and advised to call early on the day. The tickets are put on sale, which we did but there were none left and just to emphasise the demand, the cash tickets shot up in price as the day went on.

When I booked the cruise, I didn’t think we would have any trouble getting the flight tickets, according to what we were told, but we clearly got it wrong.

I’m still unclear about what these vouchers are; I googled and it looks like other people have had the same issue:

This was obviously before the move to dynamic pricing, so maybe now it requires “saver” seats to be available?
