Forums Payment cards Virgin Atlantic VA Rewards FX fees

  • 6 posts

    Hi guys,
I know that the VA Reward card has no fx fees in the Eurozone, Sweden or Romania as per the HfP review article. However, I’ve seen on MSE some comments regarding it being fx fee free for the EEA as a whole, with Norway and Denmark given as examples. Any reader got any experience to confirm or deny this?

Correct and yes. The link below will take you to Virgin Money’s currency conversion calculator. https://uk.virginmoney.com/service/currency-converter

Interesting. That link suggests no frees for CHF.

I was certainly charged a currency fee last time I used the card in Switzerland (outside the EEA), but that was a few years ago.

Well you were lucky to be able to use your card. I’ve just returned from Switzerland and my card was declined on both occasions I tried to use it. When I call them I shall ask this question. Whether I can get through or get the correct answer, who knows?

I’ve just spoken to Virgin as my card was declined in Germany and Switzerland. The CS rep seemed to have no idea what I was talking about when I asked for clarification regarding FX fees and specifically about Switzerland. After seeking advice he said no fx charge if transaction in Euro, Swedish Kronor or Romanian Lei and takes place in UK or EEA.

He or she has read that straight off the website which is incorrect because other currencies are FX Free if the countries are in the EU or EEA but don’t use the Euro.

That’s interesting. I did say he seemed to have no idea what I was talking about! I regularly visit Norway. Never used card there. Are you saying that’s fx free? I got stung for fx in Monaco and that’s Eurozone – forgot I was no longer in France/EU.

Monaco is not in the EU any more than we are! Monaco is also not technically in the Eurozone, although it does use the Euro as its currency.

@JDB. I’m fully aware that Monaco is neither in the EU nor EEA. We used to have a house near Nice. We have many friends in the South of France. We have been visiting Monaco regularly for years as we also have have a number of friends (including school friends) who live in or close to Fontvieille. It’s so easy to get off the train, drive from the French motorway or get the helicopter from Nice airport and go for a meal or nip to Carrefour and without thinking handover the Virgin credit card, which one has just used in France.

However when we were in Kosovo last year, Vodafone clearly thought we were in Monaco when we both received Welcome to Monaco messages saying it was part of our roaming package.

By the way, it’s a BIG yes to the Norwegian Krone! 😃

Thanks for the info. I did look at the converter. However it does say words to the effect that you could be charged a fx fee depending on your credit card, so not particularly helpful!

I had a large hotel bill to pay in Zurich and my card was declined, so used Nationwide. Just used calculator and my Nationwide charge was less than it would have been using my Virgin card, but obviously didn’t get any points. Will try again when back in Norway in January and compare rates again.

Has anyone used the Virgin cards in Norway and Denmark and if they do charge a fee for NOK or DKK transactions?
Their currency conversion is confusing it says for NOK and DKK:
    Currency conversion fee £0.00 (0.00%)
Depending on the account you have with us, we might charge other fees when you make a foreign transaction:
If you have a credit card, we’ll sometimes charge a Non-Sterling Transaction Fee and/or a Cash Advance fee.

Denmark is in the EU and Norway’s in the EEA, so you should be fine with the Virgin Atlantic cards.

I used my Virgin card in Norway last month and was not charged any fees.
    Eg On Statement – 9 Jan 400 NOK @ 13.98 = £28.60.
