Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Using BA Status and crediting points elsewhere – a thread

    So, I suspect in common with many other people I have made the decision to move from BA(E)C to another Oneworld scheme – given my travel pattern I have, after much research, chosen Finnair. I thought it might be useful if I logged my approach, any probably more importantly any issues I have, while continuing to use BA Gold status but crediting my avios/tier points to Finnair.

    One thing I am nervous about is BA unselecting return seats when I change my FF details for the outbound. I’m basing this on an issue I had recently where I had selected seats on BA flights via the corporate travel agents portal and on 3 occasions they got removed. I then realised this was because by BAEC details were not logged against the flight so added them and the issue stopped. So when I change the FF details from BA to Finnair will my return flights loose their seat allocation? This is a particular issue on this trip as the return is BA16 SYD->SIN->LHR which is about 24 hours on the 787-9. While I am fortunate all my long haul is in business, I really do not want a seat where I have to step over someone else to get and do want a window seat. I have one of the four on the plane which meet that criteria – unfortunately in the larger back cabin not the smaller front one.

    So for the details. At the moment we have on one BA issued ticket via a travel agent:

    LHR->SIN BA11 First (A) 6/4 with BA FF number
    SIN->SYD QF2 First (A) 11/4 with BA FF number
    SYD->SIN->LHR BA16 Business (D) 17/4 with BA FF number

    And on separate tickets:
    SYD->BNE QF520 Economy (with a bid in for upgrade) 13/4 with BA FF number
    BNE->MEL QF VA342 14/4 Business – no FF yet. Can credit to UA to help keep Star Alliance status which I am transitioning from LH Miles and More to UA or to Qatar for Avios

    The sharp eyed may notice there is no flight from MEL->SYD because I may need to go to New Zealand before flying home but do not know yet so can’t book the flights.

    My plan is to change the FF from BA to Finnair after checking in. I won’t have any issues with lounge access or fast track at Heathrow as the outbound is in First.

    I have also put alerts on the specific seat I am in on BA16 in case it becomes free after I remove the FF details.

    Any comments on the strategy is welcomed and I will happily (try to) answer any questions.

    I’ll also update here if/when things change

    I’m going the same route to AY but haven’t considered this yet. Dependent on how quickly AY credit the TP’s you could always switch back to BA FF for a few days & preserve seat selection, but given the length of time it took AY to credit my TP’s to BA earlier this year that’s probably not going to happen for you! I’d be grateful if you could please update with your progress, thanks.

    There is a key question here that I have been unable to find the answer to. At what point does it matter what the frequent flyer information is set to. I know it is not at check in as I have previously changed info after check in with no issues. Is it when you board; when the flight departs; when the flight lands or when the points are credited? My current plan is to change back to BA after the points are credited….

    When I went into the BA Lounge recently at LGW, I asked whether they could credit my flight to Iberia instead of BA, or whether I needed to do it at the gate. The guy said he could change it. I gave him my IB member number. He said all changed successfully and all flights on same PNR would also credit to IB. Did that happen? No! Checked earlier this week and both tier points and Avios have credited to BAC. Haven’t taken return flight yet. Not hopeful that any member of staff at Tbilisi will be able to sort as first flight on this route only arrived there this morning.

    I have BAEC silver for this year, but want to credit all new bookings to Iberia. When travelling in economy short haul, do I need to put BAEC on the booking to gain access to the lounge or can I simply show the BA card at the airport?

    Just show your BA status in the app to enter any one world lounge (if flying a one world airline – any class)

    Same question. BA Gold, but looking to credit 2 upcoming long haul trips (to either AY or RJ) whilst still keeping the lounge privileges…flying AY Business Lite, so lounge access not included. Can I just flash the BA app to prove status and gain access?

    As above, it doesn’t matter where you credit, if you are flying one world in ANY class and you have one world sapphire or above, just show your status and you get into the lounge

    … if you are flying one world in ANY class and you have one world sapphire or above, just show your status and you get into the lounge

    If this is a One World alliance rule, can airline members overrule it if they feel like it?

    They should not be able to and in practice I would not expect any issues. I have done this multiple times on Star Alliance without issue.
