I hold an Amex Preferred Rewards Gold Card – it’s the original charge card version not the current credit card.
I see there’s an offer when I log in (in among all the other card user offers) to upgrade to the Platinum card and get 20,000 points if you spend £4,000 in the first 3 months. I thought it looked okay and clicked on apply only to be informed it doesn’t apply to me.
Looking at the small print it says holders of the Amex Preferred Rewards Gold Card are excluded from the offer which is only open to holders of the American Express Gold Charge Card (or the Green charge card). Now I’m pretty sure Amex would like all their original Preferred Rewards Gold members to move over to Platinum so they can tidy up their accounts. What, if anything, is the difference between a Gold Charge Card and a P/R Gold Charge Card? Was there ever a plain and simple Gold Charge Card before the P/R Gold version came along several years ago?
Do you think I can persuade Amex to grant me entry to the promotion?
If you have the charge card gold I’m surety you are eligible. Use the chat function to confirm this , screenshot their answer in case of a later dispute, and upgrade.
My wife has this showing too – you are almost certainly fine to do it.
I’ve got this offer too!
Is it even a good deal? Taking into account the increased annual fee, just struggling to size up the worth of 20,000 points 🤔
Thanks to all those who’ve replied so far.
Since I posted my original question I’ve had in the past two days a personalised email inviting me to upgrade to the Platinum card and earn the 20,000 bonus points but I still had the curious message when I clicked on proceed (as I think, on balance, I’d like to) that I’m ineligible and I can’t figure out why – I have a Gold Charge Card (not the newer Credit Card version) and I am sure Amex would like to move as many of the old Gold Charge Cards over to the considerably more expensive, but more versatile, Platinum Card.
So I called them today to ask what’s going on and I was asked to send in a screenshot of my invitation email (as the man on the line couldn’t see Amex had actually sent it to me). Anyway, I’ve scanned and emailed the whole 4 page email and I’m waiting until after the weekend for a response. I’ll be disappointed if they turn me down; they have no obvious reason to do so; I suspect it’s some sort of glitch.
I’ll keep you posted!
