Turkish Airlines flight from UK to Hanoi delayed over 4h – compensation query

Hi all,

We booked a trip to Hanoi with TK with a change over at Istanbul. Flight from London arrived in Istanbul on time. However the next leg to Hanoi due to depart at 02:35 was delayed over 4 hours and I received this ‘helpful’ comms via email from Turkish Airlines.

“In order to help you manage your time more effectively, we would like to inform you that your flight TK164 from ISTANBUL, ISTANBUL Airport (IST) to HANOI, NOI BAI INTL Airport (HAN) on December 13, 2024, will have a delay of 4hr. 25min. due to operational reasons. The estimated departure time is 07:00.”

We eventually landed in Hanoi 4h 16m late and I can’t seem to find anything obvious in terms of what I can claim for due to the delay on the TK website.

Would appreciate some advice on what I can claim for and the best approach if anyone has insight.

Assuming you were on a through ticket from London to Hanoi, you need to claim £520pp delay compensation from TK and if they reject your claim for reasons with which you disagree or don’t respond within eight weeks, you can escalate to AviationADR.

“Operational reasons” covers a number of reasons.

If one or more of them is a valid reason and excluding the time they took takes the delay below the thresholds (there are 2 – one for a 50% payment and one for the 100% amount) then no payment will be due.

Of course you need to make the claim to TK in the first place to get more details.
