Planning to get the Amex Platinum, currently have travel insurance through HSBC Premier. Have opted out of the Nationwide Plus one so as to not be double insured(read somewhere that it could delay possible claims). If I can only keep one, which one should I keep, thanks.
There’s no issue being double insured – you need to declare that when you make a claim, but the insurance companies sort it out amongst themselves. Had a large claim which we used the Platinum Amex to cover, but could have used one of our other two instead.
Take a look at what each one covers – sometimes only one will cover what you need for a particular trip.

As JenT said – no problem having both – and I have both Amex and HSBC and all fine on a recent claim. One aspect to consider – Amex officially only covers you where you used your Amex card. I have had a full refund, including items not paid on Amex (mostly where they did not accept amex) where I did purchase travel and accomodation via amex. But – having HSBC premier will give you wider cover than amex (just, in my experience / opinion, less comprehensive and responsive than amex)
TL;DR; its fine, and actually better, to have both
Amex travel insurance has postponement cover, so if unwell before travel, then to change everything by a week could cost 1000s, many other insurance polices don’t have this. They just pay you the cost of the holiday you booked (cheaply months ago).
Just discovered that Yonder’s credit card has re-booking cover in its travel insurance at £180 a year.
Whilst we’re on the topic, does anyone have experience of Amex covering pre-existing conditions? For example what if something happens partway through the card year; I can’t recall Amex ever reminding me that new conditions should be declared at the renewal stage?

There isn’t any ‘renewal’ stage for the Amex Platinum insurance, it’s a rolling policy in the same way as your card contract is an evergreen one, albeit you pay a fee on each anniversary. There’s no declaration of pre-existing conditions as they simply won’t cover them, unless on the list of approved ones. You would need to speak to Amex if you developed a condition between booking and travel to ascertain their position.
Does anyone have any experience of claims? Is it pretty smooth or do you have to jump through hoops and they try to find ways out. I have both Amex and Nationwide Plus but Nationwide are now changing their travel insurance provider from UKI to Aviva (as of May 2024) but they do offer to cover pre-existing conditions, which Amex don’t.
