Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Morning! I have booked two separate flights

First is London > HK with BA
Second is HK > Taipei with Cathay

I will only have three gap between first and second flight.

Does anyone know if I need to exit HK airport and go through immigration and check in again

I asked BA and they said they merged the flight together but cannot guarantee I can transfer and may have to get luggage at HK airport and check in again

Were both flights booked with Avios on BA.com?

BA can’t merge the flights. They likely added some notes but at LHR they almost certainly going to only tag the bags to HK.

Pre covid Cathay would have picked them up and retagged them for you whilst you remained airside, not sure if that is still possible

So I’d plan to need to clear immigration and recheck. 3hrs will be tight for this at HK if passport control is busy or your flight is late but should be doable in most circumstances

This sounds amazing but they expect you to be at the counter 150min (2.5hrs) before take off … so if you land and just have 3 hours that means you only have 30min to get out of the plane, grab your luggage and make it to that counter.

What risk score did you put against ‘flight doesn’t arrive on time at HKG’ on your trip risk assessment?

I have done similar at another airport (Joburg) and missed the flight 2 years in a row. Luckily my HSBC travel insurance paid up every time for new flights (with a £50 pp excess, which for a family of 4 ended up being the max excess of £100, still pretty good I thought). I would recommend travelling with hand luggage only and checking your travel insurance so that you know what the “fall back” plan is…
