Pay £500 Amex in to utility account, then reduce DD and continue monthly topup by Amew

Alas ovo don’t take Amex, but I can still earn avios by using my HSBC premier card. Not as good as my Amex, but better than nothing.

Thankfully Octopus accept Amex so now set-up a £50/month DD and paid £2,000 by Amex for points and get closer to award value.

Also – they do not require you to have a dd atall – I pay by card after each month

Just reduce that to £1. No need to not get points on the other £49.

The snag is that you can’t really switch provider at the moment as people are not taking on new customers, so its not a topic really worth looking at.

Octopus will happily take on new customers, you just need to do it on the phone.

Ditto EDF, but if you want to get the variable (capped) tariff it’s unadvertised and over the phone only.

I reckon giving pensions advice is less complicated than explaining the energy market right now.

Wasn’t suggesting a switch – just the fact you can earn amex points etc this way.

At a time that utility bills are very high, there’s a lot to be gained.

Getting the right tariff is vastly more important than whether the provider takes Amex and, in any event, the BC Avios+ will now earn you the same 1.5 Avios as BAPP. If you are on the SVR / at the cap, that was a lifestyle choice (or possibly Amex earning choice before BC came along) and you weren’t following the consensus advice on here in late Spring last year when there were cracking fixes with all the non Amex providers.

PMSL my post wasnt to suggest a switch nor a tariff change.

It was merely to highlight the great option (with many but not all providers) to reduce or remove your monthly DD and pay by Amex instead.

Earning points/rewards instead of losing out with a DD
