1 hour on hold, 5 mins to complete a premium points booking with an upgrade to UC with the CC voucher, thanks to Jack in the call centre. Ticket arrived within 5 mins.

Nice to report some great service for once. Only issue is the massive £966 in taxes and charges of which £700 is the VS fuel tax.

What route are you travelling on? was there much availability?

I am hoping to book London to Washington DC soon.

Outside of NYC I can not find any UC reward flights!

MAN-ATL in May and June, wide open on Tuesdays out and back but pretty much no other days.

was there a specific number you called or just the one on their site? I am actually in Manchester but thought there would be more availability flying from London (plus we would get to use the clubhouse)

did you check dates beforehand or just call and give rough travel dates?

Just the main contact number. Warns of hold times up to 90 mins but got through in just under an hour at 11am.

Always know exactly what is available when you call if you can do to save wasting their time. Checked both premium and UC seats were available and have planned my road trip around those limited dates. They’re not the dates I wanted, I’ll be heading out 2 days before and back a day after I wanted but the alternative cash fares were over £1400 more which I wouldn’t have been willing to pay

did you just search points flights on their site or do you have seatspy?

Just searched on the site. Seatspy is great but my requirement wasn’t complicated.

Does anyone know if there needs to be reward availability in Premium even if you are going to upgrade to Upper straight away with a voucher?

    No just upper

If you buy a cash premium ticket you can use the voucher to upgrade to upper as long as there’s reward availability in upper. If you want to spend points on a premium and upgrade then as I understand it you need availability in both cabins.

This is what I got from Virgin on twitter when I asked about the CC vouchers:

They are generic vouchers which you can use toward either an Upgrade reward or a Companion reward. If you choose the Upgrade reward, you can purchase a reward ticket or a revenue ticket (any cabin but excluding Economy light), and the voucher will allow a one cabin upgrade, ie if you purchase an
Economy ticket, you can sit in premium using the voucher or if you purchase a Premium ticket, you can sit in Upper subject to reward availability in the higher cabin.

No space is needed in premium – just upper. You just pay the premium points. [Done so 4 times when space available in upper but not premium]

Is there anyway to work out the cost difference I would have to pay when using the voucher from premium to upper? trying to get an idea before calling so i can work out a budget.

Premium cost with points is £1057 for 2 of us
    Upper is £1977

would I be paying all of Upper price or the premium plus a bit more?

Thanks – (this is my first reward booking so trying to get my head around it all before being on hold for hours)

I would imagine its the upper price for the cash element, you are just paying the premium price for the points.

Full upper price for taxes/charges (was 966 for me as shown on the website) and then the premium points, 45k as opposed to 95k for a full upper return.
