I just thought I’ll update the readership about my recent redemption.
I booked MAN-AMS and AMS-JNB on two separate bookings.
The redemption was on business class, this would have triggered UK long haul fees if made as 1 through booking.
AMS-JNB comes at 61000 Virgin points and 220.79 Euro. MAN-AMS comes at 8000 Virgin points + £43.48 for business. the 8000 points (& cash?) cost would have been waved if I had booked it as one ticket MAN-JNB for 61000 points. However, the total tax and fees would be £372.88! so for a saving of £142 I happily spent 8000 extra points.
KLM check your luggage through with no problems at all, as mentioned repeatedly by ROB. (make sure you ask them to).
Virgin constantly showed different results on the mobile app and on the website, so too I’d get different results putting in different options of departure and arrival airports. some times the individual legs wouldn’t show up despite the through booking being available and vice versa.
Using the virgin website for airports not served by Virgin is a real faff but patience and perseverance paid off without the need to call up.Impressed if you managed to get a confirmed booking online!

How did you book the long haul flight? I’m trying for AMS to AUSTIN, but the Virgin website greys out the pay with points option. Just gives money option of £4,000+
I also just managed the same. Booked CDG – DXB for 50,000 virgin miles plus roughly £205 taxes flying Air France Business. Then booked MAN – CDG in economy for 4000 virgin miles and £30. Again saving over £100 on booking it in one go. All booked on the Virgin website without any issues.
However, having now tried to book my return, i’m getting all the way to the checkout and then being kicked out with the old “things can change pretty fast” error message.
Whats puzzling is when i enter the airport codes eg flying from AMS to Austin, the pay with points option is greyed out – cant be selected.
But from what you say , your pay with points option is selectable?
I used the app and selected “points” as the payment option.

Are you using the app or website? what works on one doesn’t necessarily work on the other. Also I found sometimes that ones you’re given the pay with cash option it will let you select the points option even if it was greyed out on the previous page.
Virgin putting up stiff competition with BA on who can provide worse ITIf you get “things can change pretty fast” this means that the seats are actually available but will need booking my phone because the website is a joke.
