Forums Payment cards American Express Strategy for points short and long-term

  • 1 post

Hey, I have recently received my first credit card in the UK – I have not lived there for many years, and after just moving back my credit history is almost zero.

I applied for the most basic cashback credit card despite earning a lot more than the basic income requirement, but I am wondering what my strategy should be moving forward.

I do have a credit history with the company (have had an amex card in almost every country I have lived in), but this is the first time I have had my own company with the credit card, so I guess I am seen as more risky.

Would you wait 6 months and then upgrade to a better card? I obviously do not want to stay with the cashback card but it was the easiest one to obtain quickly and I needed a credit card.

I would love to hear thoughts on this.

Which card is this as it’s not totally clear. You mention amex but that seems to be more abour previous cards than your current one.

You’re strategy depends on if you just want to collect points in general and be able to move them to an airline / hotel programme line as and when you want to use them (such as an AMEX MR earning card) or a card tied to a particular airlike BA or VS

Amex has global transfer programme. You could have applied with your previous one.
