So after meeting OH’s £3k target I decided to apply for the Avios Plus in early June (shame I didn’t wait a bit longer for the 50k avios bonus) as I we had some expenses coming up. I met my £3k target and the 25k Avios transferred earlier this month. I dithered about keeping it for another month or so, but decided the other night to downgrade.
I chose the downgrade option on the evening of Tues 19th. Coincidentally that’s apparently also my Statement date. The notification said my new card would be active from the 19th (as in that same day), and when my statement came through it had the £20 charge and a £20 refund both done on the same day. That was a pleasant surprise.
On Thurs 21st I received a text to say the account had been switched (and I could see the new ending numbers in my app), and yesterday (Fri 22) the replacement cards arrived together for both me and my OH.
Today I went about switching the cards in my online accounts, PayPal and Curve and all were accepted easily. When I went to change it in ApplePay it was already changed.
Compared with some of the hassles we went through with OH’s card in April (mostly with the supplementary card) I’m pleasantly surprised by just how quickly and smoothly the downgrade worked.
Back to using his Avios Plus for non Amex spend. Still deciding if the upgrade voucher is worth it.
Does a downgrade stop you getting sign up bonus in 2 years time?
I wish Virgin Atlantic would introduce a simple downgrade option on their app.

The terms say you can’t get the Avios SUB if you have had one within the last two years and you need a six month gap between applying for cards (ie you can’t upgrade from Avios to Avios+ and get a full SUB), so in theory you could cancel the free Avios card after 18 months, then reapply six months later for the Plus. However, while we obviously have no evidence, I wouldn’t count on BC welcoming you back after two years in the way Amex does.

I would think you’d need to cancel completely as you can now only have one Barclays product at a time and you need to have not held a Barclaycard product for the previous 2 years. So downgrading wouldn’t reset your 2 years, only cancelling will.

Will the same rule apply for Hilton Barclaycard holders. i.e. close completely for 6 months and then join as a new avios plus cardholder for the bonus (whatever that may be in 6m time)

This was discussed in the original articles, or perhaps the comments. For the Hilton you’d have to cancel and wait 6 months to apply for the Avios card with Bonus as you’ve not held an Avios card. The risk you take is you may not be approved. You may be able to change in app to an Avios card, but with a much smaller bonus.
The 2 years between cards is for getting the Avios Bonus a second time. If you cancel an Avios card you can reapply in 6 months but won’t get the bonus. It needs to be 2 years after cancelling one to get the bonus again.
