Forums Other Destination advice Staysure Insurance – worth attempting claim for lost prescription sunglasses ?

  • 160 posts

    Hi all,

Wasnt sure where to put this , but anyway:

While in Chiang Mai recently, on an excursion in a Songthaew, my prescription Raybans fell backwards off top of my head into the road ( i hadnt realised the window was open behind me )

Managed to get driver to stop further down the road and tailed back to approx place , myself and 2 chaps who were in vehicle jumped out and braved the very busy 3-lane road to look for them, but no-go.

I have an annual comprehensive multi-trip policy with Staysure – any point trying to make a claim ? or just put it down to experience ?

It all depends on the excess and the cost to replace (and the wording of your insurance document as to what’s covered).

If the cost to replace like for like was £150 and the excess £100 then no. If it’s £400 with the excess £50 then it really makes sense.

Worth checking your home insurance as well as some of those cover broken spectacles.

Did you get them replaced in Thailand? wondering if this might be cheaper so you don’t have to claim

    thanks for feedback !

Peter : They were around £240, and my excess is £65 ( that would be claiming for an “article” rather than a “valuable” )

I dont currently have home insurance, well not contents, just buildings ( in a flat and its included in management fees )

Lady London – no i didnt get them replaced, it was near the end of hols, so i managed without any.

@captaindave worth looking at Mister Spex to replace them. I paid £120 for prescription Ray Ban sunglasses about six months ago. They took about four days. Usually also 10 Avios/£ on BA eStore as well.

@JDB Thank you – that sounds VERY competitive – I used selectspecs, and i thought they were a decent price ! compared to the High St anyway.

For £185 net back I would make a claim on your holiday insurance. What’s the point of having it if you don’t claim?

I’m not sure a loss of glasses would be covered anyway? Most policies also have a catch all “must report to police within 24 hrs” type clause for both theft (makes sense) and loss (makes little sense).

Nothing lost in trying, but don’t be surprised if it’s chucked out.
