I am currently Diamond Status but have not done enough nights to renew as Diamond or even Gold. I do however currently hold the Amex Platinum card but considering cancelling before the end of February for the pro-rata refund.
I have a Hilton stay from end of March to early April. I think I am right in saying my Diamond status will cease on 31 March i.e. halfway through my stay. Do you know if I am likely to have Diamond benefits for the duration of my stay? I am thinking the free breakfast. Also, if i register myself with the Amex Platinum benefit for Gold, will the system be clever enough to downgrade me to Gold after my Diamond status expires!

Highly unlikely. Definitely register at some point towards the end of the period of holding your Plat even if you have higher status now.
In any event, your benefits are agreed at check-in and confirmed for the stay. Your status on check-out isn’t relevant, if it has gone up or down the hotel won’t care (I stand to be corrected on this, but that’s my experience across several hotel schemes).
