Forums Frequent flyer programs Other frequent flyer schemes Star Alliance – Different Milage Weight ?

  • 1 post

I travel at least 10 times a year between Europe and the US.

As most flights are operated either by United or Lufthansa – both in Star Alliance – I am starting to wonder : am I better off crediting the miles towards one or the other?

If the flights are operated by United, am I better off using the United miles programme?
    And vice versa for Lufthansa?

Do they have different “weight”? I.e.: Given the same flight and class, which one gives you more miles?
Is it easier to achieve a higher status with United or Lufthansa?

    Thank you for your advice.

Only you can answer that question. Put your flights and classes into this https://miles.travel-dealz.com/en calculator and you’ll see what you will earn for those tickets.

United is very flexible, Personally I don’t see Lufty as viable but then I’m not looking for status, just redemptions. In past years Agean was the easiest SA alliance to earn status but I’ve no idea if that’s still true.

More than the number of miles earned, check the number of miles required for your desired redemptions. While there are some gaps in fare classes between programs, I find that there is far greater variation in redemption costs. It ay be worth earning fewer miles on a flight if it costs significantly less for your desired award flight, and/or if you can top-up from Marriott Bonvoy or other transferable programs.

Earning from other sources, expiry and your preferred routes are some of the main factors to consider when choosing the program.
