Forums Payment cards American Express Shangri-La Jade benefit dropped from Platinum UK?

  • 7 posts

I’m at last exploring a stay at a Shangri-La property. I’ve had an un-activated account with them since 2017 which I just got activated, but now I don’t see a way to get it upgraded to the basic Gold to Jade via the Amex Platinum benefits site!

I was Jade at some point and presumably got dropped down through lack of activation.

Has the Shangri-La benefit been dropped from Amex? Their website has pages advertising it and I don’t see a story on HFP (apologies if missed).

I think the Shangri-La benefit was dropped a few years ago (I’m not entirely certain though, as I had a US Amex Platinum at the time, rather than UK).

The link that you shared is for Amex in Thailand, so does not apply to UK Amex cards.

    Yup, a few years ago.

You can do very well by booking your stay through the Luxury Circle programme though, which covers all the on-property Jade benefits.

Thanks everyone. The Amex chat claimed Shangri-La had “never” been an Amex Platinum benefit and, if it was, it was only on the Business card!

Can’t remember if it was via the Cathay FF benefit. There was also a reciprocal sign up to the Taj inner circle from Shangri La Jade and had a few good stays at a couple of Taj hotels using upgrade vouchers which were available for gold members.

Sadly, the Shangri La Jade benefit was pulled from UK cards a few years ago – it was good while it lasted! They offered various ways of keeping your Jade status alive during Covid if you made any purchase at a hotel (I went and bought a pot of tea in the lobby at the Shard just to get another year) but even that disappeared eventually.

No Shangri-La was a standalone, it died during Covid I think, but those who had it kept getting extensions (mine finally lapsed on 31/12/2024). It did allow status match to SQ as a one-time. The CX benefit is long, long dead, but was a completely different thing which must have cost Amex a fortune.
