Anyone have recent experience of Seattle – are the post covid troubles now behind it?
Appreciate all of the west coast has had troubled streets in the last few years, but after an April trip to SF I was very pleased to see it seems to have turned a corner. Has Seattle done the same?
Is Portland worth a couple of days whilst there, even if just to “tick off” Oregon? Or is what I see online still true that it’s best avoided?
More recently I can’t help, but June 22 Seattle was impressively run down.
I was in both Seattle and Portland back in April. Seattle was broadly okay with businesses starting to reopen and Pike Place Market buzzing as usual. However you can’t escape the homeless/drug problem which is everywhere.
Portland was far worse. The food cart scene was dead and the place felt almost post apocalyptic in parts. Better to steer clear and head towards the coast if you really want to visit Oregon.
Thanks, very useful. Think I will head north to Vancouver instead.

Gastown in Vancouver on my June 22 trip was beyond shocking. It was basically a shantytown, human faeces in doorways of boarded up shops, open drug use, needles foil and bits of drug paraphernalia on pavement. Rows of tents on the pavement. Other areas seemed much less damaged by pandemic. None of the grimness in Seattle/Vancouver was threatening, just depressing. Really hope these places have bounced back. Please do come back and give us some first hand feedback.
Hmm, I’m really torn in what to do!
I’m thinking of March 24- so nearly 2 years after your visits- hopefully enough time to improve further…

You really think SF turned the corner? The owners of the Union Square Hilton handed the keys back to the bank a couple of weeks ago and have just given up on the area. They had a $725 million load on it so they havent seen any improvement.

Make sure that you go to Vancouver BC rather than Vancouver WA

Westfield has defaulted on its downtown mall as well and of course WeWork and Twitter have defaulted on big properties. Hotel revenues have collapsed as crime has soared, so more defaults will follow. It’s very sad and will take a long time to recover.
Went May 2022, Vancouver BC then Portland then Seattle. YVR was great, didn’t spend much time downtown in Portland but Oregon is zero sales tax state so worth a visit for shopping. Plenty of hobos littering the streets in Seattle but aside from the aesthetics it wasn’t problematic.
