Hi
I’m flying to crete from Bournemouth with tui in May
Tui have cancelled my return leg and put the same flight number on the day before
They’ve moved my flight to Bristol instead of the one day earlier flight which I have rejected as I live next to Bournemouth Airport
I have said I’ll happily fly the same outbound and the new day earlier flight but they want me to pay £150 for this
Surely that isn’t right?
Tui is being very uncharitable asking for more money when they have cancelled the flight – did you try and escalate it?
I think their legal obligation, however, would be to get you back to Bournemouth on your original travel date, and I’m guessing no other carrier flies this route, so they could argue there is no viable alternative. You could try telling them that you will be claiming the taxi fare from Bristol to Bournemouth if you have to take the new flight, and they may re-consider.
I have done exactly that, escalated it and pointed out the taxi fare is £500+ it would be logical to keep us on the original route
Response within 48 hours.
Sent them over the cheapest quote I could find, £486
I suppose they’d have to consider a taxi a ressonable choice of mode of transport if
– no available public transport
– person of limited mobility travelling, children elderly, plus lots of luggage etc.
I’d be clear as to why taxi is reasonable choice amongst available options if any other options are avsilable, just in case of further query.
Thanks for the advice
Hopefully logic will prevail

hahahahaha….
More seriously
1) How did you get on, and
2) Was this a package booking or flight only, as I suspect if it’s the former you have a different set of challenges. You won’t be the only passenger who has been shafted here and they’ll be booking coaches to run you all from BRS. A package holiday only has to get you from A to B by whatever means and IIRC they have 12hrs to play with before it’s considered a change.
I thought it had been decided that re-routing under UK261 does actually apply to package holidays?

Whilst that may be, that would only apply for short notice changes. TUI would presumably argue at this point this is a “significant change” under the Packaged Travel Arrangements (2018) if indeed booked like that. If so, the OPs option is to suck up their solution or take a full refund. As I doubt their margin on the holiday is anywhere close to £500, they will have little desire to foot a big taxi bill. Easier for them to cancel your holiday as per the terms you agreed to at time of booking, which will come with a “generous” £25 compensation payment. https://www.tui.co.uk/destinations/booking/tandc?ptype=PDP
Re-routing is an absolute right, regardless of how much notice you get of a cancellation. I can’t be bothered trawling the threads for relevant discussions though! There were definitely some during Covid due to the sheer volume of cancellations going on.
