Hi, I’m considering doing the $49 Royal Jordanian status match to my Hilton Gold status but I am confused about a couple of things as I have never held any airline status before.
I understand that the match gets One World Ruby status. We have a trip to Asia coming up that is likely to be booked on Qatar airways – economy unfortunately is all that I can currently afford, but I’m not sure what Ruby would give me with Qatar. Would it allow me to book seats 7 days out without charge? Can I use the business class check in? Any other benefits with Qatar?
As the trip will involve 4 flights on Qatar, the $49 would easily be covered if we can book seats on each of our flights before the “free for everyone” period opens.
Also, have I understood it correctly that I would have to use my Royal Jordanian FF details with my Qatar booking and, if so, does that negatively affect the benefits of being in the Qatar Privilege programme (free wifi-of a sort etc)
Thanks for any help that can be offeredOne other problem. My town is not listed in the “City” dropdown menu to sign up to Royal Club. Without selecting the city the application won’t go through. None of the nearby towns are on there either despite many smaller towns being listed. Any way around this?
Ruby gets business check in, discounted seat selection (about 10-20% off). Strictly, priority boarding is for Qatar Silver, rather than OW ruby, but you’d probably be fine.
Thanks aseftel, very helpful. I just need to work out how to get my application for Royal Club in now! I wonder what Royal Jordanian have against South Devon towns!
Does anybody have any experience of how long it takes? The Status Match email has come through saying I’m approved but it hasn’t updated on the RJ app. It’s been 48 hours since I was approved…
Thanks!
Well, I managed to get the Royal Club account set up but then read that Qatar doesn’t allow Ruby OW members to change their FF details until you get to check in – a bit pointless as I only wanted the status to get advanced seat booking. As these QR flights are the only ones we are likely to take this year on a OW airline it would appear that the status match would be waste of $49. Shame
Quick question guys, I know it’s been answered before but I only have 24hrs free cancellation and I cant find clarification on this.
I’m RJ Gold Sparrow, I’ve booked quite a few Euro traveller fares on BA since I got the RJ status, and have successfully had access to all the LHR lounges, Munich, Belfast, Nuremberg etc, and also been able to choose exit row seats right away.
However I’ve just booked an Economy Basic fare to Dubai, and I remember reading somewhere that I wouldn’t get extra luggage allowance as RJ GS (which confirms in MMB, hand baggage only, which is fine its a short trip). However I was still able to choose seats right away, so it would appear that booking the cheapest fare has made no difference to that.
I think I’m right, and probably a stupid question, but can someone just confirm that booking Economy Basic will also make no difference as regards Lounge access with my RJ GS? I have a few long connections and wouldn’t want to be stuck in Wetherspoons!* Not interested in Avios by the way, am crediting everything to RJ from now on.
That’s how you know it was a stupid question, over 2½ hrs and no replies lol.
I’ll consider myself reassured.
Thanks everyone 😂For long haul hbo flights, you can pick a seat right away but not an exit row iirc, you also dont get any luggage but you will still get lounge.

Look at the benefits page for OneWorld Sapphire – Lounge access is listed, so you’ll be fine. Note that extra baggage is also listed, but the three pesky asterisks lead you to the bottom of the page which states “Special checked baggage privileges are not available on British Airways’ ‘Hand Baggage Only/Basic’ fares”
Thanks guys, yeah I found some of that info after posting. Seat selection was indeed available immediately after booking, got exit row seats on the domestic, but not the international leg, had to settle for the doubles at the back. As to luggage. We’ll just have to make do with the carry-ons, which is fairly generous with BA anyway, wont need a lot of clothes in Dubai!
Lounge access is a “biggy” for me, especially with a long connection, so very happy to still have it.
Thanks again for the replies@bungalow, further to this, how did your BA boarding pass appear? did it have “fast track” on it at relevant airports, and did you have any experience of priority boarding/security? when accessing the lounge, do you need to show RJ card as well, or is RJ status automatically linked to your BA boarding card?
did the status match to RJ from IHG, handy timing with my silver expiring in 3 days, have a domestic run on Sunday so will be interesting to see how it all works.
cheers!
How long did RJ give you on the status? did it align with any other particular date? eg anniversary of the status you were matching from? 6 months/ 12 months?
Haven’t checked in for my current trip yet, but the digital boarding passes for my last trip all came with the Frequent Flyer Purple Orb (OW Sapphire) on, plus “Sapphire” and RJ number bottom right, but no mention of fast track. So I went to the business check in at BHD and asked for a paper pass, which DID have fast track on. Don’t think it would have mattered, once anyone seen the little sapphire dot I was just waved on everywhere I went, fast track, priority boarding, lounges. I had a screenshot of my RJ status at the ready but never had to show it once, that was in Belfast, LHR, Munich & Nuremberg.
As I say, not interested in collecting Avios any longer from flights, not worth the hassle, everything being credited to RJ from now on so just left my RJ number on, 26 segments to renew my RJ Status and I’m already half way there!

My status match came from my Marriott Platinum, and is valid for 1 year from the match in August
thanks @bungalow, all useful information. strangely when I log into RJ on a desktop it seems to indicate that I need 30 sectors to maintain Gold Sparrow.. still much easier than BA silver!

40,000 miles or 30 segments to qualify, 30,000 miles or 26 segments to maintain, that’s what I’m reading
* Now I’m wondering is the 26 sectors to maintain only for those who have actually earned their status?
Have tried to contact them for clarification but their website is terrible, and the contact form keeps timing out!* Now I’m wondering is the 26 sectors to maintain only for those who have actually earned their status?

Thank you – Done 👍
* email just came back – Undeliverable…
I suspect it may be frequentflyer@rj.com (with a Y)
@bungalow yes the second one is correct. They usually get back to you within a couple of days. I’d also be interested to know about requalification, though currently I think I’ll probably only manage the 14 segments for Silver Jay/OWR rather than the 26/30 to retain Gold Sparrow
How do you redeem points on rj? If you select the miles and cash option it takes you to a login page that seems to want membership number and a 4 long password while if you log into the royal club and select redeem miles it wants membership number and pin number – except at no point during acct creation did it ask for a pin to be created?

Oops thanks for correcting!
So there ya go, a reply from Royal Jordanian re the Gold Sparrow renewal requirements, clear as mud.
They still haven’t addressed whether there’s a difference in required segments (26 or 30) between an “earned” GS and a “status matched” GS, so I guess I’ll have to email them again for clarification.Dear Mr. ****,
Greetings from Royal Club Members Services TeamKindly note that to maintain your Gold Sparrow tier, all you need is to earn 30,000 tier miles or 26 segments over 12 months, What ever you have reached first your tier will be maintained noting that we have a minimum segment should be collected to be qualified for the maintain in case your earned the tier miles first as the below.
