Personally, I wouldn’t worry about recommendations or booking, as the standard of restaurants is so much higher in Italy than in the UK or North America, and pre-bookimg is less of a thing than here. Wait until you’re hungry, look for a likely spot that’s full of locals, and ask for a table. If it has a menu with photos, or if it serves anything with lobster or truffles, that’s a Bad Sign of it being a tourist trap.
On restaurants, you probably know a lot more Italian than you realise when it comes to ordering food, so menus shouldn’t be too daunting.

I came a cropper a bit in Chile misreading loco for tenderloin (that’d be lomo). Turns out it’s Chilean abelone. It was nice though.
But Google translate can do whole menus from your camera.

Yes, translations can be risky. My wife ordered ‘loup de mer’ in a restaurant in Québec City which as a fluent French speaker she took be sea bass, but in Canada it means seal! Yuk.
Google translate is brilliant in China even when in most restaurants from the humblest to the fanciest they have English translations and pictures (sorry @jj) one can’t always be sure what it is. You always get something just like the picture though which is incredible. Also, depending on the angle of the camera over the words it can give an entirely different result. In more provincial places where they don’t have a menu the spoken Google translation is fantastic but feels a bit weird. Fortunately, foreigners are still quite a novelty so they persevere and usually want a photo to show people they had such exotic guests!
