Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Reward flights from Sydney to Melbourne

    Hi All

Not necessarily restricted to BA/Oneworld, but I’m looking to travel from SYD to MEL and back close to the new year period. Cash prices seem high, and I want to take a checked suitcase if possible.

    Options I’ve considered:
    1) BA.com, I can only price Qantas business class flights (availability) at 12k avios + £21 which seems a bit high.
    2) Virgin Atlantic: I have quite a few points but no availability for cash flights are showing for Virgin Australia, guess they’re separate companies.
    3) I have a bunch of Amex points as well, but not sure what the best way of approaching this is

Can anyone provide advice on the best way to use miles for a trip like this? I believe it’ll be cheaper and more convenient than cash, I’m just unsure of whether there are loopholes (i.e. opening a Qantas account and transferring points, or calling some obscure call centre for one of the airlines, etc.).

    Any input appreciated!

Don’t know if Virgin Australia operate the route. Have you read this

    And this

When I priced up a flight between Melbourne and Adelaide in economy I found that Lastminute.com were cheapest. Lower in fact the booking directly with Qantas. Try them for your dates and if they are cheaper you’ve got a decision to make

No need to open a qantas account, just book through BA if there is availability. We have just done that exact trip SYD-MEL with Avios.

Here’s another article which might turn up increased availability: https://www.headforpoints.com/2022/12/05/how-to-book-qantaslink-flights-with-avios-points/

No need to have a qantas account, or can add your qantas booking to the qantas app as a guest and check in online there.

” I can only price Qantas business class flights (availability) at 12k avios + £21 which seems a bit high.”

I did this in the summer and versus what was then a cash price of AUS$ 600 ish, I thought it was an excellent use of Avios
Quantas domestic business is incomparably better than BA shorthaul. – better lounges, Proper wide seats 2+2, far better wine from a full size bottle eg Henschke riesling, decent food, free WiFi. I was impressed.

Did it last month , booked on Ba.com – was kinda last minute but cheap enough. 40+ flights a day so prices generally pretty low

I was going to say 12k avios + £21 one-way seems quite reasonable to me for business class.

Exactly this. £140ish for the equivalent of flying London to Switzerland in Biz seems a decent offer?
