Forums Payment cards Barclaycard Avios Refunds after SUP awarded

Does anyone have any real world experience of Barclaycard’s treatment of refunds after the SUP is awarded? I often have a number of cancellable hotel and/or car pre-payments that often move around a lot in the run up to a vacation. As a result I’ve hit my SUP today but I’m anticipating triggering around £600 of refunds by the end of the week which will likely be replaced with £800+ of re-spend.

The pdf at the this link says this:

“Any refunds that are applied to your card account before you reach the qualifying spend amount will be taken into account for this purpose. Once you reach the qualifying spend amount, any refunds that are applied to your card account won’t affect your eligibility for the Avios Welcome Bonus.”

That reads like it is specifically set up to trigger once and they aren’t really concerned about post-award refunds. This is different to Amex bonuses which tend to do the hokey-cokey when this kind of thing happens – it sorts itself out in the end though.

This happened to my wife. A large online purchase took her over the £3k for the sign up bonus, but we had to refund that soon after. The charge and refund actually hit the account simultaneously. A few weeks later, we got the 50k avios when the statement was issued. At the time the total spending excluding this purchase/refund was still below £3k, but the 50k avios was already in the BAEC account. Hope this helps.

Slightly different circumstances in that I’ve already cancelled the card having received the 50k bonus points a couple of months ago, but I’m now having to have a largish purchase refunded by a supplier due to supply issues which will take me under 3k total spend. Based on the above, looks like I’d be safe from them revoking the bonus anyway and I have cancelled the card, but anyone have any reassuring experience of this? Thanks

Different circumstances for me, but a £996 fraud tipped me over the £3k spend. I disputed the fraud as soon as I saw it (within 12 hours) and despite it being refunded, I kept the 50K and the bonus avios for the £996 spend.
