I am looking for advice about redemption availability via Bonvoy.
When I search for my destination (Istanbul), I see tons of redemption availability – but almost exclusively for the bottom 1-2 tiers of rooms.
The lack of suite access is not surprising – but even the higher level queen/king rooms seem unavailable.
In contrast, Hilton seems to offer most things out in Istanbul for redemption/using points for a discount.
I’m only gold in Marriott.
Am I doing something wrong or is this par for the course?Many Marriott hotels will offer base rooms for points, plus a supplement of points or cash for a better room. This shows up in a standard rewards search on Marriott. If this isn’t showing for you, book the hotel you want, wait a day or two, and email and ask what upgrade offers are available (for cash). You can always cancel if nothing is appealing. In my experience book for points and upgrade for cash is better value than doing the whole deal for points.
The Hilton higher standard rooms are invariably terrible value for points. It’s a swizz – don’t do it.
