Forums Other Destination advice Recommendations for best UK hotels for a short break (around £200/night)?

  • 62 posts

Hi, was wondering if anyone could throw out some recommendations of hotel breaks they would endorse in the UK that aren’t blowout (i.e. Four Seasons Hampshire!) but would nonetheless be lovely for a couples break for one or two nights?

I’m looking around £200/night tops really but all suggestions are welcome!

Can really recommend Grove of Narberth. Went last month and the service was excellent, nothing felt like too much trouble.
They are on Mr&Mrs Smith (so bookable via IHG/points) and also Small Luxury Hotels of the World. Stayed 4 nights so got a good feel for the place. Good for couples, not for children.

A la carte breakfast included in all bookings. Standard rooms are about £200 a night. Very relaxing setting.

Two decent restaurants on site (the Fernery has 3AA rosettes, The Artisan Rooms brasserie – my preferred of the two to be honest – does good quality did as well at a lower price point).

Good for dietary requirements if that’s necessary.

It’s one of only a handful of hotels I’ve been to where I would happily visit an area again just to stay in the hotel.

With around 10,000 hotels in the UK, I think you are going to have to narrow your criteria a smidgen. At the very least region of the UK.

Not just help with a region but time of year. Cornwall has some amazing hotels, the Scarlet and St Moritz are both excellent and perfect for couples. The former is adults only. But you may struggle for anything before October.

You are quite right, I should have specified! We’re looking for somewhere maximum 2 hours drive from London, in August.

That’s a tight budget these days for something a bit special on peak, but how about…

    Grays Court in York.

1 hr 50 by train, basically next to the Minster. Walkable to everywhere in York. Lovely gardens backing onto the walls for August weather. Very decent restaurant. Can just squeeze in under £200 on weeknights sometimes and that includes breakfast. How special/historical? A warm welcome since 1091…

There are a number of amex offers (SLH, LHW, hyatt, IHG, marriott) that can help lower the nightly rate. Worth a run through to see if any of those works for you.

University Arms in Cambridge has had my business more than once, despite Cambridge being an easy day trip from home. Just love the location. Prices vary wildly through the year, but are sometimes sub-£200, and you may have an appropriate Amex offer to help.

University Arms is a great shout and midweek in August is 200 quid, weekend not much more. Lots of tourists but it is a nice town city.

The Fellows House is a better option in Cambridge IMO. Kitchenette, if you can cook a light dinner; lovely modern building and facilities, decent restaurant, cafe and bar downstairs, short walk to Jesus green and the punting starting points.
