Forums Other London life Recommendation for tea

  • 23 posts

Hi, I am looking for recommendations for afternoon tea in London. Something elegant and not super crowded but not overly fancy either would work the best.
    Thanks!

    The Langham.

I think they are the first in afternoon teas, have a broad menu and wonderful teas.

Time Out has a good guide: https://www.timeout.com/london/restaurants/afternoon-tea-in-london

I’d add Duke’s to their shortlist.

It’s been a few years, but we had a great experience at The Drawing Room at Brown’s Hotel.
And by “great” I obviously mean unlimited sandwiches and cakes!

Depends upon what you want. Most of the 5* hotels put on great quality afternoon tea.

I agree Browns is very good – a classy and refined offering. Claridges and the Dorchester are superb in terms of service and a very impressive place to have tea. The Mandarin Oriental is the best quality I’ve had, though it’s quite touristy even by London afternoon tea standards. I’ve also been to the Lanesborough, the Rosebery and the Ampersand which were all excellent but I would not do it again as others are better. Sketch is great if you like showy and when we went they had a ballerina!

Our favourite though in the sense of it’s where we return to, is the Rose Lounge at Sofitel St James. Friends tell me live music has returned in the form of a violinist (there used to be a harpist). It’s a small space, very classy, the music not the least bit overwhelming and the pastries excellent.

All of these will top up any of the food you are served if you are a big eater so top quality food with a glass of champagne for 100 quid a head in London is not terrible value.

Another vote for Browns though also not been there for a few years. I like the fact that it feels a bit more of an intimate space, than e.g. the Langham which is an impressive space but feels a bit too exposed for me, though I suppose it depends where you are seated. Best sandwiches of all the afternoon teas I’ve had in London, and staff put on some nice extra touches (mentioned at time of booking we were there for a big birthday).
