Forums Payment cards Barclaycard Avios Question on application process for Premier account

  • 47 posts

I have been accepted for the Avios + via the app – which tells me my new card will be sent on my next statement date of the 21st October.

Would you suggest waiting until then to apply for Premier banking? Or can i get the ball rolling now?

In theory, they’re two separate applications so you might as well get the ball rolling. But quite a few of us have reported problems applying for the Premier account and ending up with two accounts! So it might be worth waiting another week or two may allow them to fix the glitches they have but I’m weary of the time limit to get the bonus (end of Nov).

This is my story so far:

I was an existing free Avios card holder. Upgraded to Plus card through the Barclaycard app and it’s already usable in Apple Pay. Just waiting for it to arrive (and noted some Royal Mail strikes).

Applied for Premier account in Barclays app (not Barclaycard app). At the last step there was an error and it said to try again. After trying a couple of times, it said I reached the limit for applications via the app. Then it said I had to book an appointment to check my ID and address in branch. There’s a reference number which I’ve taken a screenshot of.

The only appointment I could get was 2 weeks away (next week). Others have reported longer 4 to 6 weeks!

In the mean time, I get kicked off the Barlcaycard app with a generic error. I can still login to the Barclaycard website. I call technical support and they didn’t recognise the error number. After one hour, they gave me an activation code to login to the main Barclays app. Here, I see I now have 2 x Premier bank accounts plus it lists my new Avios Plus card.

I transferred money into my Premier account so it is active. I opened a savings account tio. This is where I am at the moment.

It’s been 7 working days and I’ve not received any confirmation about my Premier accounts being opened nor received my debit cards. I have received marketing related emails (Travel/breakdown insurance and how to stay safe online) though.

If anyone else was in a similar situation would be nice to hear what happened next.

Borrowing this thread. Can I asked about time scales for new applicants.

    – Are most people having to go into branch for an appointment for the account – if your appointments are in London how quickly can you get one?
    – anyone rejected for the current account? I applied when it first came out and was rejected, my guess was because I just got back from 3 years aboard, despite 10+ year credit history before.
    – how fast are the credit and debit cards arriving?

I’m still a couple of weeks short of my 6 month break and will be going away shortly after so don’t want to miss all the letters etc.

You shouldn’t need an appointment if they are able to ID you electronically and pass whatever checks they use. My account was set up with A/C No / sort code immediately and the debit card, PIN and PIN Sentry device all arrived separately inside a week.

For my case, I am an existing Barclaycard customer (no current account before this) but I “failed” the ID check when applying for Premier in the app. Last Friday night, I decided to ring Premier customer support and the wait was fairly short. After a couple of hours, I got access to the Barclays app. My account is open, my new debit card can be used in Apple pay and I’ve enabled Avios rewards. I also asked to close the second premier account they had opened.

Honestly, I think it’s mostly an IT mess rather than a real need to check my ID. But I will attend the ID check anyway (this Friday) and see what happens!

To get the avios points do i also need to complete the current account switching service?

The current account switch is required for the 25,000 Avios rewards bonus.

The T&Cs for the main 100,000 Avios bonus didn’t state that as a requirement from what I read. It sounds like you just have to have Barclaycard Avios Plus + Premier + pay monthly for Avios Rewards. However, HfP think a switch is required because Barclays can’t be that generous. I’m going to switch a dormant account just to be on the safe side.

Thanks, yeah i think i will switch one too just in case, dont have any active direct debits set up but never seen that anywhere as a requirement

I was also told I needed an in-branch appointment to verify my ID and/or address – despite having the Barclaycard for a few months. Mine is mid-Nov (the earliest available apparently)
Now it seems I too have been kicked off the Barclaycard app – reloaded it but I have to wait for a card reader to arrive within the next 2 weeks!
    An IT mess indeed!

So I went to the branch for my ID appointment just now and the very nice lady said I was already verified. She showed me my profile on her screen and the KYC was approved on the same day I applied in the app and no issues she could see.

I showed her the screenshot of the app asking me about the ID appointment and she apologised for it as from her end, everything looks OK. Had a nice chat with her though.

There might be genuine cases where a manual ID check is required but for me, it certainly wasn’t and a bit of a waste of my lunch break.
