35K given fairly easily via chat today, last bonus over a year ago.

Interesting that Amex only value 35K at £157 though (per the dialogue that I had with them).

That’s the £4.50/1000 sell rate if you want to take the MR points as a statement credit.

Same as Tariq. 35k over chat.

Only had the platinum a couple of months, my retention offer was:

I’m sorry to hear that you want to cancel your account. Before I do so, as a valued Platinum Charge Cardmember we would like to invite you to consider the Platinum Charge monthly fee Card:
This card gives you all the same benefits you get today on your Platinum Card but you would pay your fee on a monthly basis rather than annually.

The fee will be £48 per month which equals a total annual cost of £576 which is £1 higher than your current annual fee.
This will be billed on each statement from enrolment.
The first Platinum Supplementary Card comes at no extra cost, any further Platinum Supps will be £24 per month which equals £288 annually, which is £3 higher than the annual fee.
The first four Gold or Green Supps come at no extra cost, and any Cards added above this allowance will be charged at £14 per month which equals £168 annually, which is £2 less than the annual fee.

P2 got rejected for the platinum so all cancelled for another couple of years

I got one after 4 months, having hit the sub.

Related questions, I’ve not had the card 12 months, just been charged the annual fee. Would people use this moment as the trigger to request a further retention, or wait til 12 months from last retention?

They have, all new applications are for the credit card variant, but if you already have the charge card version you can continue with it until you close it.

“Retention offers are only available if you want to cancel the card”. After I said that’s what I wanted, 50k MR offered straight away. (Offered on phone with Brighton)

Took out card October last year, hit spend target almost immediately. 50k points in March and then another 35k points in June. Both times I wasn’t fishing, I was genuinely looking to cancel. Mad to though, given those handouts. I will be 100% cancelling before renewal as it just sits mostly idle and frankly, there is no way they are going to give me any more.

Just got off the phone with Brighton – 50k MR points offered. Tried on chat last night but they just said, nope, call through tomorrow.

A few things, I joined in July 2022, so haven’t even hit 2 full months as a Plat member. Applied when it was the 30k welcome offer and still as a charge card – I mentioned on the phone that the current welcome offer is miles better and that I was thinking of cancelling my Plat card, leaving for 2 years and then having a look once more once the 2 year welcome bonus ban had been raised.

I’ve spent about £5k since getting the card – but this is a massively abnormal amount for my usual spend. Luckily P2 and I have a holiday to Vegas in Nov, so we prepaid the hotel through FHR which made hitting the spend target for the welcome bonus a lot easier.

I’ve been with Amex for 4 years, holding a range of BA cards, Gold charge card and Platinum everyday.

Who is this Brighton team everybody is calling. Need the details as I am looking to cancel in Oct unless they offer me a decent retention.

It’s their UK based customer service team – they’re in Brighton. I think it’s the only UK based CS operation, so if you call up during working hours and (this is a generalisation) get connected to someone with an English accent, then you’ll most likely be connected to Brighton

Whenever you call, ask the rep if they’re based in Brighton. If they say no, ask to be put through to a Brighton-based rep. If they say that they could help, insist to be put through. Don’t waste time explaining your issue and letting them try and fix it, despite their claims to have the same access and authorities. I’ve had it confirmed by Brighton-based reps that they most certainly do not.

I’m surprised you have not had the card for a full year and already got charged the annual fee again. Some people as you can read on the chain has managed 2 retention bonus in one year. I got the retention offer after having the card for a couple of months, paid the annual fee 2 months ago and no luck getting another retention bonus after asking several times. I think I need to wait for the anniversary of the last retention bonus.

@Reney, that was a typo, was meant to be “I’ve now had the card 12 months”.

Thanks for all the replies, I shall be calling in Brighton opening hours.

No offer for me this time. I suspect I last had one back in September. Cancelled on the spot. Had a legacy Platinum charge card. Have linked a new ARCC to my MR balance to protect the stash of points.

Just called and had an agent from Brighton. No retention offer, just the option to downgrade. I have the Platinum charge card

Just got offered 50,000 very easily over the phone in Brighton. I’ve spent about £5000 in one month on the card, and used the dining credit.

No strings attached. 50,000 MR points gratis. No time requirement, no spend requirement.

Nice. Did they question you much when discussing closure?

No. I queried if there was a time requirement and the lady said there is no time criteria, but with the hopes I would stick with the card for the year. But no other questions asides from the usual ‘are you aware of the benefits’.

Pretty much the exact same as myself then. I got the card in July too, and have only paid for 1 months fee so far.

Would appear the retention offer is not time based, rather spend based.
