I’m thinking of applying for a platinum card but have already booked several trips. Not sure whether I should take out separate travel insurance – I understand medical cover should be ok but my understanding is I need to book with an amex card to get travel insurance. Would appreciate any opinions. Thanks.
If you have ANY pre-existing conditions, then don’t rely on Amex Travel Insurance for the medical aspect.
For example, if you are on medication for hypertension, or high cholesterol, then Amex Travel Insurance wouldn’t cover you if you were to have a heart attack or stroke abroad. Much of the population will be on such medication. There is no option to declare anything. What they do cover is very restrictive.

Put simply:
*you are covered for ‘big stuff’ irrespective of how you pay
*you are only covered for ‘little stuff’ if you pay with an Amex (assuming Amex is accepted) BUT it can be any Amex in your name, including a BA Amex, and it is broken down by element (delayed flight requires flight to be paid for on Amex irrespective of how the hotel is booked etc)it is broken down by element
Aah – that is really useful to know. Not something I was aware of (having previously, some years ago, failed to get a clear answer out of Amex about what exactly ‘entire trip’ means, as in “entire trip must be paid for on an Amex card”). Thanks, good info 🙂
