Forums Payment cards Barclaycard Avios Paying BA Holidays balance

  • 54 posts

I’m due to settle the balance of a BA trip to Florence by 4th April. Rec’d the BA reminder and duly logged in to pay using my Barclays Avios Plus Mastercard, which I have used almost daily since receipt in mid March and already paid the 1st statement.
However, having selected the type of card – Mastercard CC Personal- and input the correct details, i.e. number, expiry, 3 digit code on reverse, home address as per Barclaycard records etc, I made the payment. Unfortunately, BA screen stated not gone through and should complete errors – this indicated the 3 digit code. I re-entered it and made payment – not gone through. (Not had any issues with the card in previous use and well within the credit limit)
Rang Barclaycard, waited a while, and CSA listened, couldn’t see any issues on their screen and couldn’t advise what the problem could be. Tried, optimistically, to call BA – no chance- sent around the houses by phone pad and then cut me off!! (and I’m trying to pay them money!!)
Logged back in to BAEXEC- tried twice more and no payment made!
I’m at a loss as to why this isn’t working. Previous use of Amex etc have gone through without issue.
Is anyone else having a problem paying BA holidays with this card? Clearly I want to use it towards the spend figure – otherwise not much point having it.

Haven’t some people been reporting that this new card has a business BIN? Also, can you interpose Curve to resolve this?

Sh*t, I’ve got a BA Holiday balance due next week. Was relying on it to hit the welcome bonus, more so now because the card was a few weeks late and I had to make a couple of large purchases before it arrived.

What’s a BIN and why does it matter?

You’ve tried the obvious things like changing browser, restarting, using a different computer, or switching to a mobile device?

Its not some weird thing BA side that expects you to use the same card you used to pay the initial deposit?

The BIN is the first 6 digits of the card number. It’s what is used to determine the card type, e.g. Barclays Bank Mastercard Credit, in this case.

BINs are constantly re-used (e.g. when a card is dropped by a provider, it can be re-issued elsewhere), meaning some systems will still have the old details for the BIN on record, e.g. Random Bank Mastercard Business Credit, for example and assume that’s the card you’re using.

As for the issue, have you tried it via Curve? That could get around the issue? I assume you paid the deposit via Credit Card and therefore already have Section 75 protection.

BIN (Bank Identification Number) is based on the first six digits of your card number and tells the payment gateway the type of card you are using. You mentioned that you had entered that you were using a personal MasterCard, so it is possible there is a clash in this instance if the card still shows as a business card.

Hi- Thank you for the responses to date.

    @JJ
yes I switched to from my iMac to an iPad with the same result. on selecting ‘make payment’ it briefly flashes up a screen requesting “additional bank responses” to authorise but nothing is detailed and it quickly disappears to reveal a screen stating I haven’t completed the missing fields – which I had (the 3 digit cvv)

@stevenhp 1987 – Thank you for the explanation. I don’t have a curve card. I paid the deposit with my BA Amex Plus – which I have always previously used without issue. Your comment regarding the BIN is unnerving. If-as it implies-this is a business Bin it means I would need to select the MasterCard Business card and pay the surcharge – negating the point of having a personal CC!
Hopeless situation in that Barclaycard don’t know why its not being accepted and BA won’t answer the phone!!

Try again and select the corporate/business Mastercard option.

@Tom2 You read my mind! Ive just tried to make the payment selecting Mastercard Corporate Credit card – cost £19+- and it was rejected stating it didn’t recognise the card as being a corporate card.
I then tried again as a personal card and not completed as I failed to verify my details as requested – but nothing was made available to verify!!

Very strange! Not sure what else we can suggest!

    Hi,
It would seem from a chat with Rob that Barclays has updated the industry databases but some merchants may have yet to update theirs and still see it as a corporate card.
BA may not yet have updated its system to recognise that the Barclaycard BIN has changed from corporate to personal. However, that doesn’t explain why BA declined both versions!
    Confused – who, me?

That would incur fees which I doubt they want to pay.

Either pay via Curve, or try and call BA up to pay over the phone.

    Morning,
A quick update for you- following my inability to settle the outstanding balance using my BCAP Mastercard I emailed the duty office at BA holidays on Wednesday outlining the issue. I received an auto response and the next day a BA CSA rang me. I was unable to take the call but she suggested I change browser, but would ring me again today.
I had already tried a different browser without success.
However, sure enough, she rang me 10 mins ago, said they’d had a few issues with the payment system but would take the details over the phone and see if that worked. The new phone system requires me to type my long number in once she has set the process up- there’s no dictating of the number over the phone. I then added my CVV and, lo & behold, it went through!
It’s possible they’re working on the issue but at least there is a back up if needed.
    Good luck-
Ps she did also say they’d sorted most of Wednesdays issues and things should get back to normal fairly quickly- describe normal someone?

Hmmm… my reply that is datestamped 1st April 9:15 was made several days ago… Not sure why it’s suddenly appeared!

Unsure if related but I’ve been trying to pay a balance due to Destination2 via their website. Payment fails immediately, even after 2FA’ing via the Barclays app. Tried over the phone, same issue. Called Barclaycard customer services, who had no record of the transaction on their end (so it’s not being actively declined by them). It must be that this type of Barclaycard is not accepted by Destination2’s gateway, Worldpay? Annoying as would’ve covered the majority of the £3k spend target!

Managed to pay balance of BA holiday today using Avios Plus card. No problems at all, just needed to authorise with the app. Push notification came through promptly.

Ah well, it seems I have the BCAP card from hell!
Following my issues with settlement of BA holiday balance-eventually resolved as above, I have used it daily in Madeira and back in U.K.
However, that has come to a grinding halt when I tried to book a Travelodge room at London City Airport tonight. The process flowed easily until payment. Card not recognised by their payment system-used BAPP instead.
I’m aware Barclaycard are aware of this issue but please, what is going on?
Requested supp card for OH before short break, duly arrived whilst away. Unfortunately, the process to activate degenerated into stressful farce and we gave up! The supp card is going back, unused, unwanted and symptomatic of the awful support and system failures of Barclaycard-and that’s from me who spent 30 years working for this global shambles!
I’m beginning to think the same programmers built BA and Barclaycard!

I used the avios Barclaycard to pay the balance on my BA holiday this week – it took me to the target for the upgrade voucher which posted in the app after a couple of days. Just waiting for the voucher to hit BAEC now.
