Forums Payment cards American Express Paying Amex Platinum annual fee monthly

  • 93 posts

I was told I can split the annual fee of £575 into monthly payments of just under £50.
Brighton says I have to wait 3 months. Is that true?

It’s not automatically granted, I think you have to negotiate with Amex to some extent. I was told last year that it wasn’t an option, full stop, so it sounds as though it depends who you speak to as well!

I spoke to three different agents – two out of Brighton. No luck..

I was told I could do mine by webchat at the time of applying for the card last year.

Lo and behold I was charged the full amount up front and then told by webchat that they couldn’t change it as the fee has already been taken and it will change to monthly from the next renewal.

That’s due in December so let’s see if it actually happens.

Or maybe I should webchat with them in November to confirm…

@Gary_Dexter I just phoned Brighton about it, and the agent over the phone also said the account needs to be over 3 months old, phone again afterwards and they will be able to pro-rate the fees after the new monthly plan is applied.

Interesting that you might be able to pay the card member fee monthly. I called AmEx and the non UK call centre said I had no ‘offers’ at this point and so cannot change to monthly. I asked for someone in Brighton and was told I could only be transferred if I wanted to cancel the card and if no one in Brighton was available they would proceed to cancel it. Doesn’t make sense.

I was just wondering if anyone who did change to monthly recently did it on the Platinum Charge Card? I have the card a few years so its not the new Credit Card product.

Very frustrating they’re calling it an ‘offer’ when it’s really an option.

It seems they’re phasing out their charge card offering as she also mentioned the ‘offers’ also included things like downgrade etc and that I’d zero offers. She said I can apply for new products I didn’t even call about downgrades or new products. Thanks!

It’s not really a free choice option. It’s something they reluctantly roll out if you call to cancel because you find the card too expensive. Wouldn’t expect it to apply in all cases, it genuinely is only if they deem it fit to offer it to you.

I got mine Plat charge card switched to the monthly plan a few years ago already and it worked well for me.
I remember the agent calling it “a different product”. They even sent me a new card after the switch. From a consumer end it is the same, for them I guess it is a different product.

Thanks! I suppose that makes sense.

Thanks, that is good to know. Perhaps the reason I wasn’t able to move is a mixture of things. I suspect it might also be as you mentioned a new product in their eyes. As I’m on the ‘old’ charge card I assume I have no options within that group as they move away from charge to credit. I understand Amex cannot switch between charge and credit products internally which also makes sense that the lady pointed me to their website to look at current products.

I really hope they don’t push me over to the newer credit card – I have a few supplementary cardholders and I see the new credit card offers only one supplementary card.

    Thanks all!

Before the renewal of Plat card (issued September 2021), I asked to transition to monthly payments since it would work out better from a cash flow POV. The process was smooth via chat, new cards were sent out for me and supplementary card member. I confirmed that this is still a charge card and nothing changed in that respect. I am sure thought that you have to wait for at least 3-6 months from signing up before you request this change

I might try via chat next year – my renewal was September – fee posted in October and paid. I will try them again next year before the renewal. Cheers!
