Forums Hotel loyalty schemes World of Hyatt Paid at hotel but no points?

    This one surprised me.

I booked a room via booking.com at the Hyatt Regency in Stratford, cancelable and pay at hotel on check out.

It was meaningfully cheaper than booking direct, but i was surprised that it didn’t qualify for Hyatt points.

    Any thoughts?

That’s quite normal – Hyatt has paid commission to Booking.com in lieu of giving you points. They would have matched the OTA rate, then you would have got points.

I think suggesting it’s perfectly normal not to get points if commission has been paid elsewhere is wrong though, as bookings through Emyr get loyalty benefits.

Had the rate been prepaid again I wouldn’t have expected anything, and the price was in line with what I had payed as rack otherwise.

Have given up trying to get hotels to match rates as they invariably found some nebulous reason to push back, like the check out time being 30 mins later if you book direct.

Anyway, every day’s a school day I guess!

Emyr is an independent travel agent not an online travel agent. It is clear in T&C of every major hotel loyalty programme that third-party online bookings don’t earn any points or give status benefits.

It is mentioned here almost daily and in most articles written by HPF team…

Most mentions of Emyr come with the additional information that you will get your status benefits honoured – i.e. it’s unusual to get these on third party bookings. Also, he’s not competing on price like booking.com etc, you get the best flexible rate, with all the goodies thrown in, which beats getting a few quid off the room price and nothing else.

It’s not a third-party booking in a traditional sense. Emyr and other travel agents books this for you directly with the hotel hence why you also get forwarded a copy of reservation directly from the hotel.

The commission these agents get is only the price difference between advance prepaid booking and best flexible rate.

    @NorthernLass
I might have accidentally reported your post as inappropriate. Sorry.

I’ve never had an email direct from the hotel when booking via Emyr.

Also you have no idea what commission he (and agents like him) get for making his bookings.

@meta – yes, I just meant anything other than booking with (e.g.) Hilton directly.
I always get an email which is in the same format as with a direct booking, but these seem to come from Emyr?
I hope he gets a decent rate of commission!

I never said you get an email directly from the hotel, I said you get forwarded a copy of the email and it’s the same format as @NorthernLass said as if booking directly.

If I remember correctly Rob said in the comments before he gets the difference between the advance and the best flexible rate.

Commission is typically 10% of the booking value.

That’s because he uses his email address while booking, as he acts as point of contact for all booing related issues. You can ask him to forward the confirmation, but there is no need as you can see the booking on your account directly.

I’ve found cheaper rates on booking.com and called hotel to see if they could match. They couldn’t So booked cheaper rate knowing that as booked independently I would not collect points which tbh is widely known

I’ve done this once – hotels .com was cheaper than the DT MAN direct by about £40. I actually contacted the DT and they said they couldn’t match it but would still give me my gold upgrade! Breakfast not an issue as they give it to everyone anyway. £40 saving was worth a lot more than the points I would have got.
