    Help please!
We are planning a trip to Peru and will go via Madrid using BA and Iberia on Avios either companion voucher. Can we book, on one ticket, to fly to Madrid on3 evening, stay at an airport hotel and then finish the journey to Lima the next day? ( doing it all in 9ne day would mean a crazily early start and a really long day.) thank you

Yes it’s known as a stopover booking. Much better to do it that way, avoids worrying if you’re delayed on the first flight.

Make sure you pick a hotel with a free shuttle. The Marriott Auditorium has one that runs every half hour.

Yes you can, but my understanding is that you will save a lot in charges if you start your avios flight in mad and buy separate uk-mad flight.

Indeed. Most people will book UK-Mad and then MAD-Lima-MAD-UK.

Some Latin American floghts are late at night so you can either make it early in the morning or go the day before and enjoy Madrid as a stopover the first day of your trip.

In addition to airport hotels, you can check your luggage 24hrs before your flight so can also arrive, check your stuff and then just keep a change of clothes for the next day (you can take the metro to the city centre and enjoy staying there too). To get back to the airport I would take an uber/bolt that should I cost you no more than £20.

    Enjoy your trip!

I don’t think BA flies to Lima 🤷‍♀️.
As above, if you want to save money, you need separate bookings on the outbound. I don’t know how competitive the route is, but it will help to read the threads on here about booking IB award seats when they’re released. Also they don’t guarantee the same number of seats in each cabin, which might be an issue if there’s more than 2 of you.

I think the Hilton MAD also has a free shuttle, but even without this included, the HIEX and CP often offer lower prices.

@slkmum There’s a few forumites, myself included, who have recently done or soon to do this.

I booked initially for May 25 a few days after tickets were released last year and there were 2x seats on every flight. In December I had to change my trip from May to June so cancelled and rebooked. There were still reward seats available 6 months out, but not every day and every flight. So I couldn’t go exactly when I wanted to but I still managed to find a date within a week of my preferred dates.

I booked MAD-LIM as a reward seat and then LGW-MAD separately for cash. I’m getting to Madrid lunchtime the day before the Lima flight, and staying in the centre as I’ve not been to Madrid for years and wanted to revisit. Then LIM-MAD-LHR straight through as a reward seat for the return.

Do have a read of the various threads as @NorthernLass suggested. I joined this forum last year when I was Googling about how to book these flights. It’s been a great source of info and with helpful posters on the forum and have ended up sticking around 😀

If you need an airport hotel I recommend the NH Barajas Airport. Smooth transfer and even a few local bars and restaurants in walking distance

BTW There’s currently a state of emergency in Peru so keep an eye on FCDO advice.

    @Richie
Yes will do, thanks. Was planning a quick hop into Ecuador on the trip but there’s problems there too so keeping a close eye on things. Need to see what that actually translates into on the ground nearer the time – not going until June. Hotels and internal flights with LATAM all booked on a flexible basis so can amend if need be.

Was in Thailand in 2014 a little after the coup and though we uhmd and ahhd about going, in the end by the time we got there all it meant was restrictions on alcohol sales in the 711s and spotting 6ft high bales of razor wire surrounding state buildings!

I booked the Melia Innside recently, which also offers a shuttle service. It’s currently Melia Wonder Week, so the rooms are dirt cheap (especially when combined with my 20% discount as a Gold member, and the possibility of a room upgrade).
