Can’t find an answer on whether this routing is possible……
I want to travel London to Sydney on BA; then either Buenos Aires to Madrid / London (Iberia), or Santiago to Madrid/London (Iberia).
London to Sydney is 9,188 miles. The “Leg not taken” is Sydney to Santiago (6,135 miles), and then Santiago to London is 6,280 miles. Sydney to Madrid is 5,777 miles.
(My preference would be to fly from Buenos Aires to Madrid / London – but this would not meet the BA “Open Jaw” distance requirements).

    – Does the “Open Jaw” distance rule apply for AmEx voucher if one leg is BA and the other leg Iberia?
    – If so, can I book Santiago to London via Madrid, or must I book the BA flight direct from Santiago to London?
If the answer isn’t clear, then should I call BA?
    Thanks.

I haven’t calculated your routing but there are several examples of people doing open jaw itineraries on different airlines using the 241 on the relevant threads, especially the “How to book the return at T-355” one.

You’ll have to call BA at some point during the booking process, and be mindful of Iberia’s differences, e.g. when award seats are released.

SYD to MAD is not 5778 miles!

I’d check all your distances again.

Remember the jaw has to be shorter than the shortest flight distance

    MAD-SYD is 9544 nm.

I find the easiest way when it is tight is to draw a triangle. Then on each of the sides write the options with the distances.

Sorry. Santiago to Madrid is 5,778 miles.

Open jaw rule is a concept in international ticketing standards. The open leg must be shorter than either of the flown legs.

    So EZE doesn’t work:

    LHR SYD 10,573 mi
    SYD EZE 7,326 mi
    EZE LHR 6,904 mi

SCL does work going into London:

    LHR SYD 10,573 mi
    SYD SCL 7,060 mi
    SCL LHR 7,228 mi

SCL does not work going into Madrid:

    LHR SYD 10,573 mi
    SYD SCL 7,060 mi
    SCL MAD 6,649 mi

See for yourself using GCMAP: http://www.gcmap.com/mapui?P=lhr-syd;syd-scl;scl-mad

@1958 – it’s no issue to mix BA and IB on an open jaw ticket using the companion voucher. It also makes no difference whether you return to London on a connecting or direct flight. As noted above, MAD-SYD is a tad further than you suggest, but that’s not the relevant test which is the distance between SYD and your SAm departure point. That cannot be a greater distance than either of your flights which will be a rather close run thing here.

The open jaw rules are part of IATA fare construction/ticketing rules, not particular to BA or Iberia.

Thanks for your help – and clarification.

    Back to the drawing board.

Not necessarily, given the options you asked about.

You can open jaw outbound LHR-SIN-SYD (on BA) and then inbound on either SCL-LHR (BA) or SCL-MAD-LHR (IB).

It will be a phonecall to book as you can’t book open jaw reward flights online. In fact, with the popularity of LHR-SYD, it’ll be one call at T-355 to boook outbound and then a second to add on the return once the seats are released.

In fact, SCL-BCN-LHR is probably also a potential routing inbound.

@JDB – Last year I was able to book a Virgin Open Jaw (reward ticket) that was London to LAX, then Shanghai to London. (Even though the “missed leg distance” of LAX to Shanghai was greater than either flight.
    Perhaps a mistake by Virgin?

Yes, probably as the IATA rules haven’t changed. Sometimes the fact that agents aren’t properly trained these days can work in your favour. The other possibility is that because Virgin used to allow rewards to be in halves, they actually sold you two one way tickets without you realising.
