Forums Frequent flyer programs Virgin Flying Club Obligations when award flight is cancelled

  • 161 posts

I am booked to fly ANA in F LHR-HND in April returning in May. This booking was made using VS points several months ago.

Since ANA stopped overflying Russian airspace the outbound leg has been cancelled and the inbound one is likely to be as well. In case it helps, I’ve received no notification from either Virgin or ANA that this is the situation.

I called Virgin to ask about rebooking and they said they would happily change the dates if ANA release reward space. A call to ANA was not fruitful and they told me everything needed to be sorted out by Virgin including arranging an alternative route if necessary.

My ideal scenario would be to rebook for a later date perhaps this autumn or this time next year.

    1. Who is responsible for this cancellation and what am I owed for the cancelled flight?
    2. Should I be talking to ANA or Virgin?
    3. Is there any hope at all that I can get this rebooked when there has been practically zero award availability for any route into HND for months?

    Thanks

    What @ChrisC said.

Assuming the outward flight from UK/Europe is cancelĺed this comes under EU261 / its UK equivalent. Noting particularly that even if your booking is all or part an award booking, if your EU / UK 261-covered flight is cancelled there does *not* have to be an award seat available on the flight to rebook (“reroute”) to. You have a right to any seat availale in same cabin ie if it’s offered for sale you have a right to be rerouted into it.
