Forums Other Destination advice NYC early flight – airport transport suggestions

  • 90 posts

Hi all, we are planning another family trip to NYC, possibly late July. Have re-read Rob’s article about day flights, and am considering it. We are wedded to BA due to 2-4-1 vouchers and Avios, and the only option is a 7.55am flight.

Just wanted to ask for opinions / suggestions for travel to JFK at 4.m, from anyone who may have done it before. Thanks in advance.

Book a car service. I would have said Carmel years back but terrible reviews these days, so just book an Uber or Lyft

Yes, multiple people at 0400: car for sure.

My experience was that Lyft was often cheaper, but Lyft vehicles and drivers tended to be…much more of a variety. I’d stick with Uber for an airport run with family, but do install both apps and get them ready with a payment card set up and profile filled in.

There is no need to leave at 4am for an 8am flight.

At that time of day traffic leaving Manhattan is very light so the trip is quick.

    Thanks everyone.
I thought the car option would be the best answer. My only other consideration had been potential stay at airport hotel, which some of the comments to Rob’s article suggested. But I expect the Uber would be cheaper.

Most airport hotels at JFK are disproportionately expensive and require at least a shuttle bus transfer (as well as the Air Train), so you don’t end up saving that much time. At that hour of the morning you should be fine in a taxi/Uber/etc.

I got the 7 am BA flight from BOS a couple of years ago and security didn’t even open until 4.30 am.

Indeed. I wouldn’t move from a Manhatten hotel to one near JFK just because of the early flight. Especially with kids.

Much better to have the last night in the hotel you’ve already been staying at and pack once rather then pack, move and then have to unpack a little / get setteled / find somewhere to eat etc etc at a new hotel.

Airport hotel would kill your last day, too.

Just take a Lyft, connect to your Hilton for some points.

When this was a T7 flight I’d leave Manhattan at 5.30am and have plenty of time for breakfast, could have left at 6am and made it (no luggage) . I used Dial 7 limos so I had something prebooked but Uber would be fine too I’m quite sure

But now it’s at T8 I’d leave more time as I’ve read that security there in the morning is a bit of a zoo so would probably leave at 5am. It’s a shame they cancelled the Newark day flight!

+1 to not getting an airport hotel – https://viewfromthewing.com/no-refunds-renaissance-newark-hotel-guests-told-dont-shower-due-to-legionella-outbreak/ this gives you an idea of the quality of most of them (at usually high prices!)

I was wondering what had happened to the EWR flight! JFK is a zoo full stop. We need more day flights, not less (though I think there’s an AA one as well) – that hop is not much longer than flying to the Canaries!
