Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points
Trying to apply for my wife for the Avios Plus and she has had an Amex Platinum in the past with no issues. She is self employed and earns more than enough. However the eligibility tracker says she won’t be able to get it? Is it because she is self employed?
Yes, Barclaycard isn’t too enthusiastic about the self employed and anecdotally is getting tougher in view of the weak economic backdrop and its impact on household finances.
Amex, even after tightening up a couple of years ago still remains by far the easiest card to get of any major provider. Amex analyses credit risk on a rather different basis vs high street banks.

Just out of curiosity, is that something fairly recent?
I got my Hilton Visa when I was self-employed, some 15 years or so ago, with no problems at all. I did have other sources of income too, though, at the time – mainly pensions.
